ST. GEORGE — A man died in the hospital Friday afternoon after apparently crashing a Toyota 4Runner into a residence off Canyon View Drive in St. George, fleeing the scene and then shooting himself.
At 10 p.m. Friday, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain confirmed that the man died Friday evening.

About 1:30 p.m. the St. George Communication Center received a call that a vehicle had crashed into a residence in the Cottages North neighborhood at 2050 W. Canyon View Drive. The vehicle, a maroon Toyota 4Runner, didn’t go through the house but caused significant damage to the house, Despain said.
The driver was then seen running from the scene of the accident, Despain said. Initial reports stated that the man attempted to get into some of the nearby residences.
St. George Police officers responded to the scene in search of the man who had fled the scene. Officers located a man who matched the description given in the backyard of a nearby residence. The man appeared to have just shot himself, Despain said.
“This individual had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” he said.
The man was about 50 years old, Despain said. He was transported in critical condition to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by Gold Cross Ambulance.
Investigators are trying to determine what the circumstances were leading up to the crash.
“We’re trying to investigate exactly why this took place,” Despain said. “There was a report of witnesses hearing what they believed to be a gunshot.”
At this point, the Police Department believes the man who was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound was the same man who was driving the Toyota 4Runner that crashed into the house, Despain said.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by responders on scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Whats the purpose of shooting your own arm with a bullet?
Did he use a gun or just a bullet.?
Ya, I didn’t want to be confused with shooting yourself with meth, I mean with a needle, but, I’m pretty sure I misread the original article. Very sad indeed
Dang tweekers
Oh no
Very sad. Condolences to the family.
Messed up, isn’t it?
Breaks my heart every time someone has enough pain in their head to take their own life. So sad for them and the remaining family and friends. Heartbreaking!
The ultimate permanent solution (and selfish act) for a temporary problem. And his freinds and family get to carry this for the rest of their lives. Just sad.
Thanks for the up date, while eating breakfast I had a vivid image of cold steel on the molars of a distraught person. Now go sensor SGN
