Man careens across traffic, crashes into backyard

ST. GEORGE — Members of the St. George Police Department were called out to the intersection of Dixie Drive and Valley View Drive in St. George Tuesday after a man crashed his car into a shed in the backyard of a home.

At approximately 5:08 p.m., a man in his mid-70s was driving south on Dixie Drive when he had an apparent medical episode, St. George Police Sgt. Jeff Bahlmann said. The man drove across the raised landscape median into oncoming traffic and into a backyard, where he crashed.

“All indications are that it was some form medical episode,” Bahlmann said, “or that he blacked out temporarily.”

The man did not appear to have suffered any injuries from the crash, Bahlmann said, and he declined to be transported to the hospital.

Northbound traffic on Dixie Drive was reduced to one lane for approximately one hour as the scene was cleared. The man’s car was not able to be driven from the accident scene and had to be removed by tow truck.

The man was not given a citation, Bahlmann said, and no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

The St. George Fire Department, St. George Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

He suffers a “medical episode,” isn’t transported to the hospital and is not issued a citation? Wow, who does he know? Sounds a little fishy to me. Hopefully, someone was there to punch holes in his license.

I saw this- I agree!!! He crossed over the median into the oncoming traffic lanes- then crashed down into someone’s backyard! There could have been a head-on collision! No citation? No checkup? Scary this guy will probably be driving again today! St. G is the city of sh!tty drivers!

The Driver License Division will be notified and he’ll lose his license. I know. The same thing happened to me.

    • Koolaid January 22, 2015 at 9:49 am

Maybe a pair of magic underwear saved him and everyone else around him from injury.

He is my friends grandfather. And he took himself to the hospital. And is in there right now. You can refuse medical attention at any accident. You should keep your mouth shut Beaven.

  • M and M cookies January 21, 2015 at 8:34 am

Why are people never issued a citation????why don,t they do an investigation to see what the medical problem was??its so easy to say,Mel asleep, some medical reason… So many lie on their renewal drivers license form saying they don,t take any medications so they can get their license…then when something happens, they don,t get a citation saying it was medical reasons…?????

  • koolaid January 21, 2015 at 8:50 am

Someone younger would have gotten an improper lane travel citation. Benefits to be old and worthy in tthis town as long as you are not dancing.

  • tight magic undies January 21, 2015 at 10:11 am

Wasn’t even issued a citation? Hmmmmmm.

  • C Stubbs January 21, 2015 at 10:17 am

This is my Dad, he had the right to refuse medical. He went to the Hospital and in there still. None of of you know exactly what happened. I have been sitting here reading all of these un-informed comments only infuriates me. There is a lot of could have , would have, and should have in these comments. Beaven, there is nothing fishy about this, a “medical episode” can happen to anyone at any time. Beaven you also made the comment “wonder who he knows”. That is an easy one to answer. He knows God. And I Thank God my Dad wasn’t hurt in this accident. And that no one else hurt. Yes this accident could have gone south real quick BUT it did not. And to answer REDROCK LOVER, FYI He is one of the safest drivers around.

    • Chris January 21, 2015 at 11:32 am

You can bet his insurance company is not going to consider him “one of the safest drivers around.”

    • arts and letters January 21, 2015 at 12:32 pm

Good response. I hope your dad is okay.

      • C Stubbs January 21, 2015 at 9:38 pm

Thank you so much ARTS AND LETTERS I appreciate that.

    • arts and letters January 21, 2015 at 12:32 pm

My reply was intended for Mr. Stubbs, not Chris.

    • Bunny2015 January 21, 2015 at 1:29 pm

shame on your dad for driving like a maniac

    • Anonymous Coward January 21, 2015 at 1:36 pm

Best of luck to your dad.

    • Beaven January 21, 2015 at 8:22 pm

Maybe it’s time to be a good son and tell dad it’s time to give up his license. Had he’d killed someone, you’d be visiting him in the slammer.

    • UTCOWBOY January 21, 2015 at 11:33 pm

Well if your so concerned about your dad then why aren’t you paying attention to him and his status instead of playing on the cell phone. You infuriate me

  • Meanie January 21, 2015 at 12:31 pm

Thank goodness he wasn’t hurt too badly! Rather than talking crap … maybe we should be praying for his full recovery!

    • C Stubbs January 21, 2015 at 9:42 pm

      Thank you so much

    • Koolaid January 22, 2015 at 7:52 am

Or thanking god that he didn’t injure or kill anyone

  • Lois Jordan January 21, 2015 at 1:39 pm

Walk a mile in his shoes before you start making comments like this. This happens to be my brother and I’m reading this in Virginia. Shame on you! !!!!

  • SSfreeze January 21, 2015 at 5:16 pm

Thank your “God” the old coot did not kill any innocent people. Take his driver’s license away for good and keep him off the roads!

  • groanattack January 21, 2015 at 5:30 pm

More exciting than the amusement rides at Lagoon.

  • b gunderson January 21, 2015 at 6:18 pm

for the most part people dont know what thwy are commenting on until they know the facts! the reason for no citation is no law was broken it was medical. it could happen to anyone.by the whay this was my dad and he refused to be transported but his wife took him to the hospital . this could have been worse then it was . but at least no one else was hurt . all you people bashing on this ? i hope it happens to you one day then you will see how it is !!!!

    • CStubbs January 22, 2015 at 9:58 pm

      Thanks BGunderson…. Love your Guts

  • Lois Jordan January 21, 2015 at 7:31 pm

What about llegal immigrants who don’t speak the language and don’t have a valid drivers license? I was hit last month when he ran a red light. He happened to be in his mid 25’s. Not an old coot s was stated earlier.

    • UTCOWBOY January 21, 2015 at 11:35 pm

LOL I don’t think anybody cares.

    • Dana January 22, 2015 at 5:40 am

Geez, try to stay on topic. This isn’t about illegals with or without a drivers license. Glad your brother wasn’t seriously injured and didn’t injure someone else. This could have very easily turned into a tragedy.

  • morman January 21, 2015 at 8:29 pm

I hope he is OK. C stubbs your comment was great! Don’t let these trolls get you upset. That’s all these people live for. Just pray for them.
