ST. GEORGE — A 14-year-old girl was taken to the hospital late Saturday night after falling off a portion of Dixie Rock, also known as the Sugarloaf, on Red Hills Parkway in St. George.

Just after 10 p.m., St. George Police officers responded on a report the girl had fallen 10 feet down the back side of Dixie Rock near the west parking lot, St. George Police Sgt. Dave Williams said.

Williams said it is unknown what led to the girl’s fall, but at that time of night, he said, Pioneer Park is closed and can be dangerous due to minimal lighting.

We encourage people to be careful around that area after dusk,” Williams said. “We’ve had a lot of falling risks up there.”

The teenage girl sustained injuries that were not life-threatening to her back and finger, as well as scrapes on her arm from the landing. Her parents took her to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George for medical attention, Williams said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Surprising this does not happen more often.

    • Gopher Roper January 18, 2015 at 9:15 pm

I’m surprised about that also but I’m sure the overreacting local authorities go I wouldn’t be surprised to find a fence up there now

  • Gary January 18, 2015 at 7:27 pm

Police officers responded? What law did she break?

    • Gopher Roper January 18, 2015 at 9:20 pm

The Park was closed so that’s trespassing and number 2 when she fell and hit her head she had visions of sugar plums dancing in her head. that’s 2 violations right there

    • Open your mind January 19, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Gary, Police Officers do more than just arrest people for law violations. At times they get there before the ambulance or fire department and actually save lives by performing CPR and other life saving measures.

    • Somerset January 18, 2015 at 10:09 pm

I generally don’t wish bad luck upon anyone, but ya know Koolaid, I hope you find yourself in need someday after a tragic event. I’ll be the first to ensure there is no fundraiser for you. What a ….
      Ed. ellipsis.

      • Gopher Roper January 19, 2015 at 6:32 am

So how would you stop a fundraiser for Koolaid.? Do you know who Koolaid really is? you have Koolaids real name.? I’m just curious as to how your going to stop it. are you having a court order serve all the local banks to shut down Koolaids special account.? are you going to place a ban on all yard sales with another order.? just wondering

        • Somerset January 19, 2015 at 8:38 am

          • Somerset January 19, 2015 at 2:50 pm

@ETM and GopherDoper, it’s great to see you two are so concerned about Koolaid’s financial welfare. Wouldn’t it be sad if he’s short of cash when the need arises. Perhaps you two will chip in for his needs. The rest of us will well remember your denigration of the generosity of this great community. As for the plan…… I’ll just leave you wondering. And remember, blow hard.

          • NO INFO AVAILABLE January 19, 2015 at 11:16 pm

  • THE LOCOMOTIVE January 20, 2015 at 10:19 am

For all those posting disrespectful comments, please stop. It is highly inappropriate and very rude. The young women in this story made a mistake in her footing and injured herself. It could have happened to anyone. I plea with you to have a little decency and respect.

Also, about the police, it is time for you to put the dancing incident behind you. It is old news and the police do a great job in our city. It seems that nobody wants the police until they need them. Once again, have a little decency and respect. They deserve it.

    • ladybugavenger January 20, 2015 at 11:36 am

Is dancing legal yet? Can’t put something in the past that continues in the present and then becomes the future. So without change, the past is the future.

      • One for the road January 20, 2015 at 3:29 pm

Well uhh no dancing is still illegal unless you have a proper permit and your outside the St George city limits

    • Shelly January 20, 2015 at 11:56 am

The St. George Police Department is great and they do an amazing job. A few years ago I was very sick with the flu and passed out briefly. My friend called 911, but I told him to cancel the call because I felt better within a few minutes. The 911 person wanted to talk to me to be sure, and I told them I was okay. About 15 minutes later two St. George PD officers rang my doorbell to check on me and make sure I was really okay. That is going above and beyond the call of duty, and I really appreciated it. Thank you SGPD!

      • ladybugavenger January 20, 2015 at 5:31 pm

That is their duty Shelly. What if someone was threatening you and forced you to cancel the 911 call. It is very good they checked on you. Thanks to SGPD 🙂

        • Shelly January 20, 2015 at 8:13 pm

Yes that’s right LBA, that is their duty. I just thought I’d say something nice about the SGPD , instead of the mostly negative stuff that is on here so much lately.

If don’t like what people post here then I suggest you not read the comment section of the articles

  • Steve January 20, 2015 at 11:42 am

I’ve noticed St. George News always wants to call it “Dixie Rock.” It is actually known as the Sugarloaf. You need to hire some local people who know the area to check the geography in your news articles.

    • Avatar photo Joyce Kuzmanic January 20, 2015 at 7:53 pm

It is called both, Steve. We have explained both terms in several reports on our site; in fact, the first episode of the “No Filter Show” was on the Sugarloaf – “The sweetest rock in Dixie,” I believe it was called. But that was by no stretch the first. Here’s a link to the sweetest rock … enjoy:

Thanks for the link to the entertaining video. However, the Sugarloaf is not another name for the Dixie Rock. In 1862 the rock did not have the word “DIXIE” on it. The Dixie Rock is what newcomers call the Sugarloaf. The more you can help newcomers to understand and appreciate the grand history of this place, the better. That’s why I recommend hiring staff members who are locals, who understand the geography and the history of the area for news reports, etc.

        • Bender January 22, 2015 at 4:53 pm

Joyce is a newcomer. No red sand in her shoes. Maybe by the 4th generation of Kuzmanics we can call her a local.
