UPDATE: Arrest made in connection with Middleton stabbing; STGnews Videocast

ST. GEORGE– An arrest was made Wednesday in connection with a street fight in the area of 2056 E. Middleton Drive in St. George Tuesday evening during which four men in their 20s were assaulted with a knife.

Jerome William Nelson, 20, of Washington, was arrested after detectives processing the scene located a backpack, containing suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, which was determined to belong to Nelson, the St. George Police Department said in a statement issued Wednesday.

Police also discovered Nelson had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Nelson was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility. He was charged with a third-degree felony for possession of methamphetamine, and two class B misdemeanors for possession of drug paraphernalia and an outstanding warrant.

During an investigation into the incident, which is currently active and ongoing, police said two men were outside talking in the residential neighborhood shortly after 9:30 p.m. when they were approached by four other men, and words were exchanged, the statement said. The encounter escalated until a knife was presented and used during the altercation, according to the statement.

St. George police officers responded to the scene on a report of an altercation involving a knife and an ax. Police immediately located four men in their 20s who all had wounds consistent with being cut with a knife. Three of the men were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George by ambulance in stable condition. Their injuries consisted of cuts to the neck and back of one man, a cut to the upper side torso of another, and cuts on the hands of the third. The fourth man received minor cuts to his fingers and was not transported to the hospital.

Information was received that two other men, also in their 20s, had fled the scene on foot.

A perimeter was established with the assistance of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington City Police Department. Detailed descriptions of the two were provided and within a few minutes two men matching the description were detained.

On scene, officers located a knife and an ax, the statement said. The knife had a blade approximately 3 inches long and is believed to be the knife used in the altercation. Police said they believe the ax was only displayed during the incident, but not used.

At this time, investigators are still trying to determine who the aggressors were, the statement said.

“Due to the complex nature of this investigation, St. George police investigators are working closely with the Washington County Attorney’s office as they review evidence and interview everyone who was involved,” the statement said.

Authorities said charges may be filed on those involved at a later date.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

@T again I live very close and go by what I see not what is reported. That young man asked me personality if I was interested or if I wanted to buy drugs before. When asked why he thought I might be interested. He said he asked me just because I have long hair. Now who was making assumptions based on looks? And who is the dum!## now T? There are a lot of tweekers herion dealers and users in the Casitas just look at how many times someone has been busted there. The police and drug task force make regular stops there on a monthly basis.. And the stupid dealers keep right on selling to undercover cops and paid snitches, So that being said just who are the stupid ones?

    • ladybugavenger January 16, 2015 at 12:42 am

  • real life January 14, 2015 at 10:26 pm

After watching the video, it seems the HOA in that neighboorhood has a much bigger problem than residents not keeping up their lawns, or inproperly displaying yard ornaments.

I caution everyone to be very careful what you believe coming from the news and the police. From personal experience, you can be charged with a crime, the news can run with the story, your face can be put all over the papers and TV and you could have proof you weren’t even there and it doesn’t matter. The news media does not follow up with stories, they take whatever the police say and repeat it. Then other news outlets tell the same story. It is truely shocking how the news media takes what is told to them hook, line and sinker. All jokes aside, the citizens need to start questioning the news and the police. It is shoking the unchecked power these two groups have. I wouldn’t have believed it until it happened to me.

Does your comment have something to do with the riot charge from the fight at the bar? Just curious.

ive known Jerome for years and wrestled with him throughout high school. Despite him making some bad choices, he was still one of the chilliest, nicest guys I’ve known. And I know he wouldn’t have started any of this with out being provoked somehow..
