4 injured, 2 suspects in custody, following street fight in Middleton; STGnews Videocast

ST. GEORGE – At about 9:32 p.m. Tuesday, St. George Police responded to the area of 2056 E. Middleton Drive in St. George on report of several people seen fighting in the street and an assault in progress. Four men in their early 20s were found to be injured, and two male suspects, also in their early 20s, were in custody of St. George Police by about 10:30 p.m. with no further suspects at large.

Although the details of events preceding the street fight remained under investigation, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said at 10:45 p.m., officers found a large gathering in the street outside the complex on Middleton Drive, with four men injured.

“What we understand at this point,” Despain said, “is that this gathering somehow got heated and an argument ensued which led to the assault taking place. It was reported that a knife was brandished as well as an ax during the assault; we’ve recovered both a knife and an ax.”

Police had not yet determined whether the knife and ax recovered were in fact the ones used in the assault, he said.

When police arrived on scene, Despain said, they came into contact with four men who had suffered what officers on scene described as minor lacerations.

“One individual had cuts to his finger, another individual had a cut on the left side of his body – kind of under his arm – another individual had a cut to his neck – his neck area – and another individual had a cut in his abdomen area,” Despain said.

None of the injuries were life threatening, he said. Three of the men were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, and the fourth declined transport.

Two suspects that were associated with the assault that took place are in police custody, Despain said, and there were no other suspects at large that police were looking for.

Washington City Police Department was called in to assist because, when the initial reports came in, St. George Police did not know exactly what they were facing. They had reports of many people and were not sure how many suspects were involved, so Washington City Police helped in establishing a perimeter as the incident was addressed.

Washington County Sheriff’s K-9 unit also arrived on scene to assist in locating drugs, guns or other evidence that may be relevant to the ongoing investigation.

Police were not releasing particulars and identification of the persons injured or the suspects taken into custody, as interviews, gathering witness statements and evidence was ongoing Tuesday night.

This is a developing story.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

      You know this how?

    • Slim January 14, 2015 at 11:09 am

Actually, you are incorrect in your analogy. Middleton is part of STG. I believe you think this happened in Warshington City, and it did not. Good effort in trying to use the “Dogtown” phrase. However, did I already say you failed.

  • Koolaid January 14, 2015 at 10:05 am

Well, it’s a good thing they were fightin’ and not dancin’. Dancin’ is illegal in Dixie, ya know? Did that hunny of a woman by the skimboard park instigate this fight?

  • brent January 14, 2015 at 10:28 am

2 or more people in a fight. Riot charges need to be filed.

  • JT January 14, 2015 at 11:17 am

BTW the 2 suspects they gad in custody were victims. The other 4 should of been arrested they were not stabbed they were slashed because the other 2 were defending themselves. It is sad and ir was a hate crime! I’m hoping to see the 4 arrested so they can’t harm others!

  • that one guy January 14, 2015 at 11:53 am

What probly will happen or already has happened is that the BIG BAD A** WANNA BE TOUGH GUYS that started it, will just turn around and rat on the guys that didn’t start it just like I bet has happened in recent incidences and the detective and police officers that get involved will not know how to do police or detective work right and we’ll just run with it and in the end look like idiots lame S***

An ax? Was one of them a woodsman?

  • Hmmmnn January 14, 2015 at 2:21 pm

I think the media should become more involved with this one..I live in the area and after talking with witnesses of this event it sounds like a definite racial hate crime and possibly even a racial riot..the injured people involved in this event were heard yelling “white power”..by many witnesses…and went over in a group of at least 5 individuals to attack one black man at his place of residence..And the only arrest that has been made out of all of this is of that black man for seemingly unrelated charges..sad sad day for this community and country

    • Jesse January 14, 2015 at 5:30 pm

Call Al Sharpton and get him on the next plane to STG !!
But seriously, I think more info needs to come out before jumping to conclusions. Just like other early reports of incidents nationwide , things reported to have been said, never ever happened at all.

      • Hmmmnn January 14, 2015 at 7:24 pm

Lol…I just live in the area…I have zero personal involvement in this event whatsoever..but police went door to door(my door included) in our neiborhood this morning collecting witness statements…so naturally most of us came outside…and kind of talked amoungst ourselves during the process….all and all EVERYONE living in our community has known of “Jerome” for at least the past Year…(sometimes reluctently ..he’s just..been around)…NOONE recognized or had ever seen any of the individual’s that were injured in this circumstance…several witnesses heard “white power” or “porch monkey” both prior to… and during the situation…I’m going off personal statements of people that were directly involved..and/or even detained for questioning…I’ve heard NO statements to the latter of what I’ve heard from anyone that witnessed/ saw or heard this event…seriously..they are all very young..stupid..”kids”…but I truly believe this was a racially motivated HATE crime…

        • that guy January 14, 2015 at 11:43 pm

Thats funny I live in the area too. And the only ones crying hate crime are the tweekers that this guy sells meth to. Also I have heard that it was four hispanic guys that wanted him to stop selling in therir area. But until you fine folks that witnessed it all come forth no one will know the real story. And rumors will continue to get spread around.

Al Sharpton said he’d be right over…

  • mo ferguson January 15, 2015 at 9:19 am

Feguson PD will be sending “consultants” to help sort it all out. And CNN will send Anderson Cooper to report on it.
