ST. GEORGE — A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Nevada man who claimed responsibility for a hit-and-run incident on Old Highway 91 in October 2014 that killed 57-year-old Steven Jed Canfield who was riding a hand-crank trike near the Kayenta Community of Ivins.
Gary William Fairse, 33, of Mesquite, Nevada, was scheduled to appear in 5th District Court in St. George Tuesday on charges brought by the Washington County Attorney for third-degree felony failure to remain at the accident involving Canfield’s death. The summons was returned unserved and Fairse failed to make his initial appearance, Washington County Attorney Brock Belnap said. The court issued a warrant for Fairse’s arrest.
On the evening of Oct. 21, 2014, Fairse was traveling westbound on Old Highway 91 near the Kayenta Community of Ivins when his car struck and killed Canfield, who was riding a hand-crank trike, Santa Clara-Ivins City Police Officer Chad Holt said.
Fairse, who was driving a passenger car, left the scene of the accident, unaware, he said to police, that the object he hit in the road was actually a person. Once he heard reports of the accident, he called and told police he caused it.

Sometime after the incident, Fairse moved from the address in which his court summons was sent and it was returned to the court, Belnap said. Due to the lack of knowledge regarding Fairse’s whereabouts, the court put out a warrant for his arrest.
“Once that comes through and he is located,” Belnap said, “court will proceed.”

… Was it a accident to run that guy over sure. But at least own up to your mistakes ,go get him dano
Ed. ellipsis.
Yes, an accident. A woman driving in the area, shortly before, said that the cyclist was weaving in and out of the traffic lane …. and it was dark.
BUT….when you hit ANYTHING, you should stop. Once it’s hit-and-run, you are responsible.
This sounds like a job for Dog the Bounty Hunter. Dog, Beth and Leland ALWAYS get their man.
Uh… FYI. They chase down bail jumpers. They’re not police officers
ou guys act like this is a joke that was my fatherI’ve been driving truck my whole life I know what I hit diD you guys read the report he dragged my dad for over a half a block and left him to die
Not a joke. It was an awful death. I’m sorry for your loss.
I knew I had heard of him before. He’s a registered sex offender, obviously not his first run in with the law
This guy gets a warrant in the hit-and-run death of a cyclist, as he should. However, boyscout and their leaders can drop trees on a highway with no repercussions for their actions that kill a motorcyclist.
