CEDAR CITY — One Cedar City family brought in the new year with the birth of their first child, the first baby born at Intermountain Healthcare’s Valley View Medical Center in 2015.
Brooklynn Rosaura Lazaro, was born at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, weighing 5 pounds, 12 ounces, and measuring 18.5 inches long. She and her mother, first-time mom Rachel Cantu, are both doing very well.
“My due date was actually Jan. 2, but I started feeling contractions regularly all day yesterday, ” Cantu said, “and by this morning, I knew she was on her way. Once I checked in here at Valley View, I went from being dilated to a 4, all the way to a 9, in an hour. Delivery took only 20 minutes. She didn’t cry, she just made a tiny little whine and that’s all.”
The baby’s father, Filiberto Lazaro, said being a first-time dad is exciting.
“She is so tiny and so perfect,” Lazaro said. “We are so happy.”
Brooklyn’s parents received two large gift baskets, donated by volunteers and employees at Valley View Medical Center; including lots of blankets, new onesies, diapers and baby supplies.
“These baskets are wonderful, and the nurses here have been the absolute best,” Cantu said. “I have loved my experience here.”
Newborn Brooklyn is Valley View’s first baby of 2015. There were 883 babies delivered at Valley View in 2014.
