SOUTHERN UTAH — The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a “Winter Storm Warning” for the central and southern mountains of Utah in effect Friday until noon and a “Hazardous Weather Watch” for the western two-thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming in effect Friday through January 3.
Winter Storm Warning
Affected area
Central mountain and southern mountains of Utah including the cities of Cove Fort, Koosharem, Fish Lake Loa, Panguitch, and Bryce Canyon.
Timing
This warning remains in effect until noon Friday. Snow will continue through the morning hours and then gradually decrease through the afternoon. New snow accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected.
Impacts
Accumulating snow on high elevation road surfaces will create winter driving conditions. This includes all passes through the central and southern mountains of Utah.
A “Winter Storm Warning” for heavy snow means that significant accumulations of snow are expected or occurring. Driving conditions may be hazardous. Use caution. Keep a winter storm survival kit in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
Hazardous Weather Watch
Affected area
Southwest Utah, Utah’s Dixie and Zion National Park, Lake Powell, central and southern mountains, Cache Valley-Utah portion, northern Wasatch Front, Salt Lake and Tooele Valleys, southern Wasatch Front, Great Salt Lake desert and mountains, Wasatch mountain valleys, Interstate 80, western Uinta Mountains, Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs, western Uinta Basin-Castle Country, San Rafael Swell, Sanpete-Sevier Valleys, and west central Utah.
Timing
Beginning Friday lingering snow mostly across the southern and central Utah mountains and adjacent valleys will continue to affect travel mainly along the I-15 corridor from around the Fillmore to near Cedar City.
Saturday through Thursday another storm system will bring the next threat of snow mainly to the northern and western outlook area starting late Saturday night and continuing into Tuesday. Temperatures will remain cold through the first half of the week. A potential for gusty easterly winds along the Wasatch Front Monday night through Tuesday night.

Road impacts
Update: As of 10:30 a.m. December 26, state Route 143 at mile marker 15 remains closed from Brian Head to Panguitch Lake. Use alternate route.
