Self-reliance workshop teaches women self protection, prevention, empowerment; reservation deadline

ST. GEORGE — A workshop on how assaults on girls and women are planned, progress and, most importantly, can be prevented will be conducted during the luncheon of the St. George Branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 185 S. 1470 E. in St. George.

Tim Eicher, recently retired Dixie State University professor of family and consumer sciences will lead the workshop. The presentation is the result of Tim Eicher’s distinguished teaching career in the fields of education, early childhood intervention, family studies and relations. He plans to continue developing the workshop and offer it on a regular basis to other community groups.

Tim Eicher and his wife of 38 years, Penelope Eicher, have lived in Dammeron Valley since 1980. Tim actively supports the Heart Walk Foundation which Penelope Eicher founded, a nonprofit corporation with a mission to work with indigenous peoples primarily in Peru’s Andes Mountains.

The membership meeting and luncheon is open to the public. Seating is $16 and reservations are needed by Dec. 30. Reservations can be made online.

Be safe, and be aware of you surroundings at all times. Be connected to what’s going on around you- no place is immune from a predator, just because st george isnt Vegas doesnt mean it is safe here, there are predators among us. Please watch your children and teach them stranger danger, and women practice stranger danger in your own lives….Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

St. George needs all the domestic violence self-help workshops it can get. I certainly hope that’s what this is…

Self-reliance, self protection, prevention, empowerment for women.. don’t these things go against church teaching of women’s expected roles and behaviors?

  • Sgnative December 20, 2014 at 6:24 pm

No koolaid they do not. And even though you are trolling I will comment so others won’t be led astray. I’m guessing you are meaning the mainstream church here. The lds church most definitely teaches for women to be self sufficient and empowered.

A recent business study indicated Utah as the worst state for women due to lower wages for women compared to men in the same job positions. Utah women are subjected to that concept of glass ceilings in work and government positions. Added to these work concerns is Utah’s distinction of having one of the highest rates of domestic violence against women. Finally, the perception of women and marriage is to marry them young and keep them dumb. It’s your Utah culture that breeds that attitude.

We let our daughter go to this workshop last year. The minute she got home she demanded that we take her to Wal Mart and buy her some colored underwear. If that wasn’t enough, a few days later she got her nose pierced, and then she started bullying her siblings until they would cry. She has since dropped out of school, hitched up with the carnival and is now operating their ring toss game.

You sound stupid Koolaid. But what’s new? You must be confused with California or New York. I say this only because, well, I’m sure you already knew , but Utah was the 2nd state to give women complete suffrage behind Wyoming. Foiled again you redundant, uneducated fool . Utah, Wyoming, Kansas, Kentucky. Read a book Einstein insteD of just spewing crap. You are, quite literally. A human dump truck.
