COLORADO CITY, Arizona – The weather wreaked havoc for some motorists in Colorado City, Arizona, early Friday morning as a pickup truck flipped on an icy bridge and a semitruck slid off the road in foggy conditions.
Shortly before 8 a.m., a pickup truck traveling across a bridge on state Route 389 in Colorado City hit ice that had formed on the bridge and flipped, landing on its top on the side of the road.
Though the rest of the highway had been clear when the accident occurred, early morning frost had caused the ice to form, creating slick conditions.
“Bridges are famous for being icy when the rest of the roads aren’t,” Colorado City Fire Chief Kevin Barlow said.
One traffic lane was blocked while emergency responders attended to the accident, but passing vehicles were only halted for about two to three minutes while responders directed traffic around the incident.
Though there was significant damage to the truck and it had to be towed from the scene, the occupants of the vehicle were able to walk away unharmed.
“Thank goodness there were no injuries,” Barlow said.
Prior to that incident, in the earlier morning hours, a semitruck, also traveling on S.R. 389, was pulling a semitrailer. The semitruck was traveling in foggy conditions and ended up sliding off the highway into a steep pit, Raul Garcia, public information officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said.
Garcia said he wasn’t sure whether ice on the roadway also played a part in that incident, but the slide-off did appear to be weather-related, he said.
No injuries were reported, but the incident impacted traffic for a short time.
“The westbound lane was blocked for about 15 minutes until the tow truck came,” Garcia said.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
