Cedar City mayor, city manager invite public to strategic planning meetings

CEDAR CITY — Cedar City Mayor Maile Wilson and City Manager Rick Holman seek public input on a city mission statement and city vision during two strategic planning meetings, the first to be held on Thursday and the second on Dec. 2, both at 6 p.m. in the Festival Hall Room 1 of the Heritage Center Theater, 105 N. 100 E. in Cedar City.

A strategic plan is a document used to communicate with the organization and its stakeholders about actions required to achieve goals, Wilson and Holman wrote in the document.

The strategic plan is what will direct the city,” Holman said in an interview with St. George News Tuesday. “This is the first time the city has had a strategic plan. This is an effort that started in January with the City Council. They made the effort to identify what we need to do as a city, and these meetings are the effort we are making with the community to validate those items that the City Council suggested, as well as to get some additional input on what we should be doing.”

Topics that the pubic will be able to comment on at the meetings include economic growth, quality of life, public infrastructure, financial security and more.

“While those within the City have been working on our strategic plan for months,” Wilson and Holman wrote in a document about the strategic planning meetings, “we are interested in knowing what our citizens believe is the most important for our community going forward.”

The activity of strategic planning is used to set priorities, focus of energy and resources, strengthen operations, ensure that employees and other stakeholders are working toward common goals, and adjust the organization’s direction in response to a changing environment.

“Strategic planning is an effort that produces fundamental decisions and action that shape and guide what an organization is, who it serves, what it does, and why, with a focus on the future,” the document states. “Effective strategic planning articulates not only where an organization is going and the actions needed to make progress, but provides a measurement of success.”

The public will have the opportunity to learn about the city budget and the city staff’s focus and standpoint regarding it, Wilson said Tuesday.

“These meetings will allow us all to be on the same page with the city vision,” she said.

The Nov. 20 and Dec. 2 meetings are the first public strategic planning meetings that city staff has organized and is an opportunity for the staff to educate citizens on what is being done with the city, Holman said.
