ST. GEORGE — The St. George Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that occurred at the northbound St. George Port of Entry building off of Interstate 15 Exit 1 Friday night.
Just before 6:30 p.m., the St. George Fire Department was dispatched to a fire that started on a kitchen stove in the Port of Entry building. Employees evacuated the building and called 911 after a fire alarm went off and they noticed heavy smoke in the building, St. George Fire Capt. Rob Hooper said.
“We arrived on scene and found heavy smoke in the building and a fire that had been burning in the kitchen on the stove,” Hooper said. “Damage was limited to the kitchen — to the stove and the wall and some of the ceiling, and our primary job was to ventilate the smoke out of the structure.”
Employees at the Port of Entry put out the flames with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived on scene. The fire had apparently started on the stove and then traveled up the wall, Hooper said.
The cost of damages from the blaze, which was contained to the kitchen and caused damage to some appliances, is estimated to be a couple of thousand dollars, Hooper said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation at the time of this publication.
Twelve St. George Fire Department personnel with two engines and a ladder responded to the scene along with Gold Cross Ambulance, but no injuries were reported among the approximately six employees who were in the building at the time the fire started.
