Couple arrested for attempted burglary

MESQUITE, Nevada – A local business owner called the Mesquite Police Department Sunday reporting a suspicious person attempting to open one of the doors to their business. The suspicious person quickly left the area when they heard the business owner inside, the business owner said, according to a statement issued by the Police Department.

Officers promptly located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop, the statement said. The driver was a woman and she had a male passenger. Officers determined the vehicle they were driving was reported stolen, the statement said, and found burglary tools and various items believed to have been stolen inside the vehicle.

“It is always the goal of the Mesquite Police Department to have a rapid response to calls of service,” Mesquite Police Chief Troy Tanner said. “One of the many ways we assure quick response times is; officers are assigned to geographical areas throughout the city. Whenever and wherever a call may come in, rest assured one of our officers will be close by.”

The driver was identified by police as Naomi Barnet, 30, of Las Vegas. She was arrested and charged with felony attempted burglary, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, and various misdemeanor traffic offenses.

The passenger was identified by police as Paul Sanchez, 25, of Las Vegas. He was arrested and charged with felony attempted burglary, felony possession of a stolen vehicle, and a gross misdemeanor for possession of burglary tools.

“If it weren’t for the quick work and actions of the men and women of the Mesquite Police Department,” Tanner said, crediting police dispatchers and officers, “the couple would have continued on their crime spree and then abruptly left town.”

This case is currently under investigation and further charges are pending, according to the statement.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
