TOOELE — It’s no secret Cedar has struggled offensively this season, averaging just 13 points a game in going 1-5 in 3AA South Region play.
So Redmen quarterback Brecken Lewis decided to take thing into his own hands Friday night in the first round playoff game at Tooele. The Cedar senior scored five touchdowns, including a 76-yarder to open the game, as Cedar knocked off the Buffaloes 34-22.
The South’s sixth-seed, Cedar had no problem moving the ball against Tooele. Lewis scored thrice in the first half on runs of 76, 2 and 24 yards to help the Redmen forge a 21-7 lead. The Buffs Jordan Shields hit a 42-yard field goal just before halftime to cut it to 21-10.
Tooele cut to 21-16 in the third quarter on a Ryan Brady TD, but Lewis punched it in from 3-yards out to make it 28-16 with 4:36 to go in the third.
A Lewis fumble was scooped up and temporarily gave the Buffaloes some hope when Brady sprinted the turnover in from 22-yards out to make it 28-22 with more than 11 minutes to play.
But Lewis iced the game with 1:36 left on a 15-yard rush to make it 34-22 and seal the win.
Cedar scored on drives of 76, 74, 30, 78 and 68 yards.
The Redmen, who had more than 400 yards of offense against Tooele, will travel south to St. George and battle Pine View (7-2) in the state quarterfinals next week. Cedar, 5-5, lost to the Panthers 46-24 a month ago at Panther Stadium.
Tooele, which ends the year 7-4, got 109 rushing yards from Stratton Atherly.
