ST. GEORGE – In a special meeting of the Washington County Commission Wednesday, the Board of Commissioners voted to recognize and honor Grant Gerber, a commissioner from Elko County, Nevada, who died earlier this month after an unusual journey to Washington, D.C.

“It’s a tribute to Grant Gerber and his peaceful demonstration against the encroachment of the federal government,” Washington County Commissioner Alan Gardner said.

Gerber, a veteran who received a Bronze Star for his valor during the Vietnam War, continued fighting for causes he believed in throughout his life.

Earlier this month, Gerber organized and participated in a Pony Express-style ride in which a mail pouch full of petitions and resolutions were carried by horseback and delivered to members of Congress. It was on this ride, spanning from ocean to ocean, that Gerber lost his life.

On Oct. 7, while Grant was carrying petitions to Washington, D.C., that expressed concerns about federal overreach, his horse stumbled, and in the ensuing fall, Gerber suffered a severe concussion. Nevertheless, he finished the “Grass March Cowboy Express” ride all the way to D.C., successfully carrying petitions to members of Congress despite intense headaches and visits to the hospital along the way. While on his way home, Grant checked himself into a hospital in Wyoming. He was subsequently transferred to Salt Lake City, where he died two days later.

Oct. 31 is Nevada Day, and Gerber’s sacrifice and service will be honored in conjunction with the Nevada state holiday during a parade Friday in Elko.

According to a press release from the Washington County Commission:

Washington County recognizes Commissioner Gerber’s contribution to not only his constituency, but to all of us who share his concerns and values.

Ed. note Oct. 31: The characterization of Gerber as a “former veteran” has been corrected to read “veteran.”

Although if him and I were to sit down together we probably wouldn’t agree on much. However you have to respect his dedication to his beliefs. May he rest in peace. Btw he is a veteran and not a former veteran.

Oh you are so right Hockeyguy, taking care of that now. Thank you – once a veteran always a veteran. Pardon the misstep.

I respect what he did. He was correct in his views and he was standing up for us all. In New Mexico where I come from the government is shutting down the forest because they claim there is a meadow jumping mouse living near the creek. ( There is no mouse!) My neighbors and family can’t even water their cattle or go camping. I don’t think the government care a whit about any thing we try to do or say. They are going to do what they want to. Don’t bring up rule of law. There is no such thing in this country any more. I wish his family the very best.

A very sad day indeed. 🙁

God’s ministers on earth (ROM. 13:6).

  • Blondies October 31, 2014 at 6:52 am

    Bundy supporter? Then no loss.

    • Stunned October 31, 2014 at 9:29 am

Blondies, Your cold and insensitive comment is dastardly to say the least. This man lost his life in the pursuit of something he believed in. That is cause for pause no matter what the belief is. I wonder if you will be remembered by the same measure… “Obama supporter…good riddance”

      • tc rider October 31, 2014 at 10:01 am

stunned, let me try and write it in a different context, Grant waas a respectable person and done honorable things, and I do not know what association there was with bundy, But I will think you will see substantial opposition to anything associated with bundy and all the nut job wackos’that he surrounds himself with.

Are you usually a blind supporter of the govt and it’s out of control beaurocracies?

        • Blondie October 31, 2014 at 6:01 pm

Any politician or law enforcement agent who supported Bundy is about as worthless as they come. That’s my opinion.

    • bluegrass October 31, 2014 at 7:09 pm

Blondies, keeping the “civil discourse” alive and well. Just like all good little liberals. “I will let you speak your mind without interference, as long as it is completely in lockstep with my beliefs. Otherwise, you are an uneducated fool who deserves to die!”

      • Blondies November 1, 2014 at 6:53 am

You just described those people around here who call themselves conservatives and Republicans but you forgot the if you don’t like it you can leave. Bundy and some of his fool bundy supporters say very heartless and despicable things about people. So they get no sympathy from me.

  • real life October 31, 2014 at 12:58 pm

No matter which side you are on, you have to be able to let the other guy have his say. While I certainly would disagree with a lot of what he stood for, he has the right to stand for it. You have to respect that. Sorry for his families loss.

  • TruthSeeker October 31, 2014 at 5:47 pm

The damn govt and BLM shutting down ranchers with arbitrary and false pretexts. I’m amazed that there are people that actually don’t agree with his protest and also the comparisons to the Bundy Ranch situation. He and other ranchers are doing an important thing by fighting to keep govt limited in their over reach and keep the relative power in the hands of the people.

  • TruthSeeker October 31, 2014 at 5:51 pm

It’s not about a desert tortoise, or cattle, or the men themselves, or whatever reason the govt and media want to say it’s for, this is about the rights of We the People, Liberty and justice. Anyone that disagrees are flaming authoritarians. How anyone can be so uniformed as to the current state of govt control and corruption is beyond me and it gets upsetting.

    • Bender November 4, 2014 at 11:41 am

So the federal government, tasked with managing the land for ALL of the U.S. citizenry, should roll over and let deadbeats like Bundy walk all over them? Those federal lands belong, in part, to me. I don’t want a clown like Bundy overgrazing and mistreating cattle on them. Neither do I want control and ownership passed to the Legislative clowns in Carson City, Nevada, to sell off and/or restrict as they see fit.

      • TruthSeeker November 6, 2014 at 10:46 pm

Bender, it’s clear you don’t know enough of the situation and are just repeating talking points. First of all, the BLM manages land and does not own it, even if they want to act like it. Second, if Bundy was over grazing then his cattle would not have been able to sustain. There was no mistreating of the land, in fact he’s built it up and has water structures and things built that the BLM destroyed. Lastly, you should realize how much of the rights of the people Bundy was supporting. He was representing us more than you know. You don’t understand that now because you constantly grovel and beg for your big government to be all powerful like they are your God. I I can tell you about many of the hidden truths and real reasons the govt is after Bundy land and other ranchers also. People like you contribute to tbe death of the American way. Are you proud of yourself? 90% of Nevada is owned by the govt so don’t you think that’s enough? – and your looking for more public lands than 90%?- get real dude.

  • TruthSeeker October 31, 2014 at 6:04 pm

The BLM don’t need full combat militarized agents with assault rifles and snipers, and the USDA don’t need submachine guns either. What the f**k has been happening to this hijacked govt? Time to wake up people

    • Koolaid November 4, 2014 at 10:32 am

Carpet bombing would be a more effective way of ridding the land of rodent infestations like the bundy infestation.

      • TruthSeeker November 6, 2014 at 10:48 pm

Kool-aid is another state sucking socialists that approves of unwarranted govt drone strikes of America citizens. What a disgrace you are to liberty.

  • Zonkerb October 31, 2014 at 6:56 pm

@Real Life I don’t have to respect anything he did just another Bundy scum bag supporter now I respect my right to my opinion

  • Delong November 1, 2014 at 9:13 am

Conspiracy land, Utah. I respect this man for protesting his beliefs peacefully and within the law. RIP. On the flip side, the way these southwest counties are going, maybe Bundy will be elected to county commission. Lol
