Cedar, Desert Hills survive semis, to face off for 3A soccer title

SANDY — Cedar won the rubber match and earned its way into the state championship match.

The Lady Reds eliminated defending-champion Dixie 3-2 Friday, ultimately taking two of three from the Flyers on the season, to earn a berth in Saturday’s big stage championship game at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Brooklyn Shakespeare scored two goals and Nicole Jensen blasted one home as Cedar improved to 13-6 on the season.

The Lady Reds will play region rival Desert Hills, which defeated Juan Diego in a penalty kick shootout 2-2 (6-5).

Kaley Brooksby was one of the heroes for the Thunder, who captured their 14th win of the season. Brooksby had numerous saves in keeping the Thunder in the game during regulation and overtime. Then came the PK shootout. Both teams scored on the first five kicks, After a Desert Hills goal, Brooksby tipped away a Juan Diego shot with one hand and clinched the win.

DH led 1-0 and then 2-1 in regulation behind goals by Brittney Moore and Brooklyn Lott. JD tied the score with less than five minutes to play on a controversial foul call in the goalie’s box. Ashley Buck hit the PK and forced extra time. Neither team could score in the two OTs, prompting the PK finish.

Cedar and Desert Hills will square off at 4:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto. The two teams split a pair of games this season, with Cedar taking a 4-3 OT win at home and D-Hills countering with a 4-0 victory in St. George on Sept. 29.
