News short: Teen struck by car while riding bike

ST. GEORGE – A teenage boy was transported to the hospital early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bike in a St. George neighborhood.

The St. George Communications Center received a report of the accident just after 7 a.m. The boy was traveling east on 160 South in St. George, riding his bike in the road, while a Subaru Forester was traveling north on 2060 East, St. George Police Officer Derek Lewis said. As the boy attempted to turn left, the Subaru hit him.

“The teenager was struck, they believe, about 25 mph,” Lewis said.

The boy was transported from the scene to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. Lewis said he does not know the extent of the boy’s injuries.

“He was up and talking to people on the scene,” Lewis said.

Lewis said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and at the time of this publication it has not been determined whether any citations will be given. The teenager had not yet been interviewed regarding the incident, Lewis said.

“We’re still doing follow-up on the crash, so we won’t know (regarding citations) until we meet with all parties involved,” Lewis said.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Yesterday I saw a kid wearing headphones riding a bike through an intersection going against traffic on a busy street. He appeared to be oblivious to any crossing traffic, cut right in front of a truck. He had a helmet, but it was hanging from the handlebar.

I ride my bike on sidewalks all the time because of two close calls of vehicles swerving accross bike lanes and one time vehicle hit curb right behind me and missed by inchess.
Both incidents people were on cell phones and Alot of people driving around here must have very important bussiness too attend to, if they have to talk on phones while they drive.
Unti law enforcment or some new technology comes out that will jam cell phone signals in cars, I will continue to ride my bikes on the sidewalks.
