Three Region 9 teams emerge victorious in first-round of 3A soccer playoffs

Dixie, Desert Hills and Cedar all survived and advanced in the first round of the 3A State Soccer Tournament Wednesday afternoon. Snow Canyon fell in a PK shootout to Juan Diego and Pine View dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Bear River.

The defending-champion Flyers emerged from a 0-0 halftime scrum to take a 2-1 win over Uintah. Aubri Challis and Starlee Woobury each scored goal to put DHS ahead 2-1, though things got tense late with Uintah’s Lyndsey Bennion scoring late in the game. Dixie, 13-4-0, advances to the quarterfinals and will host Stansbury Saturday at 1 p.m.

Desert Hills took a 3-1 decision over visiting Morgan. Madi Hansen had the only goal of the first half, then added another after intermission. Brooklyn Lott also scored for Desert Hills. DH, 12-4-0, visits Bear River in a quarterfinal game Saturday.

Cedar downed Park City 2-1 on the Miners’ home field. The Lady Reds, 11-6-0, travel to Payson Saturday.

Snow Canyon battled Juan Diego to a scoreless tie through both halves and two overtimes. The Soaring Eagle keeper, Audrey Hall, stopped the first two SC shots, leading to the 4-1 edge and the win in the penalty kick phase of the game. SC finishes the year 11-6-0.

Pine View battled top-seeded Bear River tooth and nail, with the Bears finally breaking the scoreless tie on a Sadie Croney goal midway through the second half. Thye Panthers end the year 6-11-0.
