St. George area authors win awards; public reading

ST. GEORGE—Local winners of the statewide League of Utah Writers contest and other local authors who entered will read from their entries at the Heritage Writers Guild monthly training meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Washington City Library, 220 North 300 East, Washington, Utah.

Saint George area writers brought home an impressive array of awards given by the League of Utah Writers in the following eight categories.

Prose Poem

  • 1st Place, “Vintage School Days,” Betty Vickers
  • 2nd Place, “Just So,” Marilyn Richardson
  • 3rd Place, “Looking Forward,” Betty Vickers
  • Honorable Mention, “Twin Outrage,” Betty Vickers

Narrative Poem

  • Honorable Mention, “Roads Taken,” Marie Tollstrup
  • Honorable Mention, “Lament,” Marilyn Ball
  • Honorable Mention, “The Staff Meeting,” Betty Vickers

Love/Loss Poem

  • 2nd Place, “Embers,” Marie Tollstrup
  • 3rd Place, “Spring Disaster,” Marilyn Richardson, tie
  • 3rd Place, “Tatters,” Betty Vickers, tie
  • Honorable Mention, “Ode to My Beloved,” Marie Tollstrup

Light Verse

  • 3rd place, “Raccoon Shuffle,” Marie Tollstrup


  • 2nd place, “Sergeant Stubby,” Russell Estlack
  • Honorable Mention, “A Good Death,” Marie Tollstrup
  • Honorable Mention, “High Wire Act,” Marie Tollstrup

Spiritual Essay

  • 2nd place, “Flight,” Marie Tollstrup
