CEDAR CITY — Defense ruled the day at Redmen Stadium Thursday night as the visiting Warriors squeaked out a three-point victory.

snow-canyon-smcedar-smNeither team had 200 yards of offense and both teams were playing without their starting quarterbacks. Jake Frei, Snow Canyon’s starter, was out with a concussion. Mason Fakahua, Cedar’s sophomore stud QB, injured his knee in practice this week and is out for several weeks.

With the new QBs struggling to find a rhythm, the defenses smelled blood in the water and pounced. The only TDs came on the first drive for each team. Brecken Lewis scored on an 8-yard TD run after Cedar drove 75 yards to open the game. Snow Canyon matched that with a TD drive that started at its own 20. Jackson Nowatzke hit Britton Webster from 12-yards out to tie the game late in the first quarter.

The defenses took over from there.

Snow Canyon took a 10-7 lead with 4:10 left in the third quarter after recovering a Cedar fumble at the 22 and advancing five yards. Kolton Barber, who had a 47-yarder taken off the board on a Cedar penalty earlier in the game, had no problem from 34.

Cedar looked like it would take the lead with 3:23 left in the fourth quarter when Lewis hit receiver Jadon Beazer with a long pass. As Beazer rushed inside the 10-yard line in anticipation of the go-ahead TD, Warriors DB Caleb Heward poked the ball out from behind. The fumble went into the end zone and was recovered by the Warriors.

Cedar got another shot four pays later when Snow Canyon fumbled at its own 32, but Richmond Anderson picked off Lewis with 1:29 left in the game and the Warriors were able to run out the clock.

Snow Canyon, now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in region play, gained just 171 yards in the game, although running back Josh Barnes had 41-rushing yards in the second half. The Warriors host Desert Hills next Wednesday.

Cedar, now 3-4 and 0-4 in region, will need to win at least one of its two remaining games to have a shot at the 3AA playoffs. The Redmen travel to Dixie next Wednesday before closing the season at home vs. Payson.
