HURRICANE — A 39-year-old Hurricane man was arrested Tuesday and charged with having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
During a police investigation, the girl told officers that she had been having sex with Scott Maurice Covington, Hurricane City Police Officer Ralei Morris wrote in a probable cause statement supporting the arrest.
During a follow-up interview with witnesses and Covington, it was confirmed that the girl had sexual relations with Covington, Morris said.
Covington was arrested and charged with a third-degree felony for sex offense with a 14-15 year old.
The investigation is still ongoing, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said, and more information on the alleged offense is still being collected.
Covington was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility. Required bail is currently set at $5,000.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Third, according to by best Google skills, before the 1900s in the US, the age of consent was 10 yrs. of age, in addition, this girl consented to the marriage, as well as had her parents. In-addition, had they had intercourse, which is just heresay, they were married, so legally wouldn’t have even been immoral. So there’s something different about the lame guy in the article. In today’s world naturally that is way too young. Back then, people were lucky to live to be 60 years old and usually died much sooner so marrying young was not atypical. It wasn’t typical for older men to marry very young girls but it happened. Back in the day, it was not a sin to marry a young girl.
My research shows that prior to 1885, all states in America except for Delaware set the “age of consent” to either 10 or 12, and Delaware the age was 7.
