ST. GEORGE — A white Kia Sportage made minor contact with a 15-year-old boy on his bicycle while attempting a right-hand turn at 2670 East onto 1450 South in St. George Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. when a woman in her 30s attempted to make the right-hand turn at the stop sign, St. George Police Officer Tyrell Bangerter said.
After the woman looked both directions and prepared to turn, the boy who was eastbound on the sidewalk, rode in front of the vehicle, Bangerter said.
” … the car started to go and made very light contact, a minor scratch was made on the front bumper of the car and a rubber mark of the bike tire,” he said. “The bicyclist sustained an injured ankle. It was nothing obvious and he was not transported by medical.”
The woman had looked left and right to make sure traffic was clear, Bangerter said, when the juvenile came off the sidewalk in front of her and she struck the back tire of his bike and his ankle.
The boy said he felt sore and his mother would take him to an Instacare for a checkup.
The boy was referred for pedestrian violation and no other citations were given in the incident, Bangerter said.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
Ed. Correction Sept. 26: The model of the vehicle appears to have been a Sportage not an Escape.

There’s no such vehicle as a Kia Escape. It’s either a Kia Sportage or a Ford Escape.
Thank you Joanna, our reporter double-checked and the vehicle appears to have been a Kia Sportage. I’ll be issuing that correction. Again, thank you for your help.

Better check the phone records of both party’s. They both where texting when they made contact
That’s how they start. Then they grow up and blame all cars for driving anywhere on the road. Don’t people know bicyclists own the roads?! It’s the cars fault!! It was on the road that a bike was soon gonna be on!!
Maybe the bicyclist should complain of neck pains and get a payout for insurance 😉
Ho hum yawwwwwwn
This is news? I changed out a light switch yesterday without turning the power off and got a minor electrical shock. Where were the reporters?
Were you digitally stimulated?
That’s your own fault ron
It is against the law in St George to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk. A bicycle is considered a vehicle and must travel in either bicycle lanes or to the right on a street. Bicyclist must walk their bikes in crosswalks or use traffic lanes like a vehicle. Check the City website for details.
Another such accident happened last week @ the intersection of Blvd. & 400E. The guy rode his bike off the sidewalk right in front of a car that was turning.
“The boy was referred for pedestrian violation”…..what does that mean? Where is “pedestrian violation” located? Where was “the boy” referred to?
