All of the Red Storm fall sports teams were in action this past week. The football team lost to the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks in a game that got away early. The volleyball team captured its first two conference wins at home. The mens’ and women’s soccer teams had their final tuneups before beginning conference play this week. The men’s golf team are in fifth place at the Western Washington Invitational going into day two. The highlight of the week would be the new team record and victory earned by the women’s cross country team’s Skyler Storie as both the men’s and women’s team competed in the UNLV Cross Country Invitational.

FOOTBALL
Undefeated Humboldt State dominated Dixie State, holding the Storm to a season-low 147 yards in a 50-3 win at Hansen Stadium Saturday night.

The Jacks offense scored six touchdowns – four rushing and two passing. Humboldt State’s defense forced two fumbles – one run back for 52 yards, leading to a touchdown – and two interceptions, including one taken back for a pick-six score.

DSU cornerback Zac Christian led all tacklers with nine stops while safety Aeryus Holloway made eight tackles. Senior defensive lineman Jake Miller had another big game with seven tackles, two for loss including a sack. Defensive back Witham and linebacker Garland Munns each recorded an interception.

The Red Storm will host preseason GNAC favorite Azusa Pacific this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL
The Dixie State women’s volleyball team played at home for the first time this season and swept two weekend matches to open PacWest Conference play.

The Storm defeated Notre Dame de Namur in straight sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) to win its home opener on Friday night.

The Red Storm hit .376 for the match and held the Argonauts’ attack to a dismal .025 clip.

The team followed up with a dominant performance over Dominican, also in straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon.

Dixie State will head back on the road for contests against Holy Names, Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur next week.

MEN’S SOCCER
The Dixie State men’s soccer team traveled up north for a final tuneup game Tuesday before starting conference play this week.

After securing the opening goal of the match, the Red Storm were unable to capitalize on multiple chances on goal, dropping a 3-1 decision to Northwest Nazarene on the campus of Westminster College.

The Storm took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when a Jorge Echavarria header met the net after a throw in from Bryan Baugh.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. Sixty-five second later, the Crusaders scored off a corner kick. The teams ended the half knotted up at 1-1.

In the 68th minute, a foul on the Storm set up NNU for a free kick just outside the box. Julio Castillo took the free kick and perfectly set up Erik Anderson for the go-ahead goal. The Crusaders added an insurance goal in the final minute on a breakaway.

NNU outshot the Red Storm 12-10 for the match despite an even 7-7 tally in the second half. Ethan VandenBosch and Michael Gray paced DSU taking a combined seven of the team’s total shots.

Spencer Anderson played in goal for the first half and made two saves while Eddie Ortiz surrendered a pair of goals over the final 45 minutes to take the losing decision.

Dixie State returns home on Sept. 27 to open Pacific West Conference play against California Baptist at 10 a.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Dixie State women’s soccer team fell to the Cal Poly-Pomona Broncos 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Field. The Red Storm were outshot by the hosts 20-3 for the match including a 13-0 drought in the second half.

The loss drops Dixie State to 1-3-1 on the year while CPP avenges their lone loss of the year earlier to DSU, improving to 5-1 in their 2014 campaign.

Cal Poly Pomona wasted little time putting pressure on the Storm and lit the scoreboard in the third minute. Off an entry pass deep into the box, Duran scored from close range for a 1-0 CPP lead.

After the Broncos jumped in front, the Storm had three opportunities in the opening half. Erica Gonzalez got two looks in the 17th minute – the first went wide left and the second was blocked away by the Broncos defense.

Aarika Andersen put the last DSU shot on goal, but it was saved in the 38th minute.

Dixie State kept scrambling, but could not register a shot over the final 45 minutes. The fulltime whistle blew with Dixie State being handed its third consecutive loss to California-based clubs.

The Red Storm rebounded in its final preconference tuneup. Senior forward Jennifer Mason broke a 1-1 tie by collecting a loose ball in front of the net and knocking home her fourth goal of the season for the game-winner against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Monday afternoon.

Mason’s goal was her eighth game-winner of her career.

DSU and CSUDH played fairly even over the first 20 minutes of the match with the Toros taking an early 4-3 shot lead. Dixie’s fourth shot in the 27th minute gave the Storm a 1-0 lead. The play sparked on a cross from Jasmine Arollo played into Mason. Off a rebounded ball, Erica Gonzalez powered a shot from the penalty area to the left side of the net.

Dominguez Hills knotted the game in the 40th minute to send the match into halftime even at 1-1.

After an early Toro shot, Dixie State started attacking the net heavily mere minutes into the second half. Mason had a crack at the goal in the 62nd minute that missed wide. She didn’t miss two minutes later. Off a free kick, the ball ended up loose in the left side of the box. Mason corralled the ball and beat the CSUDH goalie to her near side post for a 2-1 Storm lead.

Dixie State weathered four shots on goal from CSUDH over the final 15 minutes to close the club’s first road win of the year.

With seven shots herself; Mason took the majority of Dixie State’s 12 shots for the match. Goalkeeper Danica Nusink made five saves in goal to earn her first DSU victory.

The Red Storm begin PacWest play on Saturday, Sept. 27 at home against California Baptist at 12:30 p.m.

MEN’S GOLF
Hayden Christensen and Dane Nelson paced the Dixie State men’s golf team with matching two-round totals of 141 to position Dixie State in fifth place overall at the Western Washington Invitational on Monday.

Tied for fifth individually, Christensen had a first round even-par 72 and then shot a three-under-par 69 in the second round. Nelson had a two-under-par 70 performance in the first round and then had a one-under-par 71 round two score.

Cody Wass recorded a pair of 73’s in his two rounds of golf sit in a tie at the No. 28 spot. Kenny You and Donny Hopoi tied for 35th after day one. You had a pair of 74’s while Hopoi shot a 75 in the first round and a 73 in the second.

The Red Storm continue play today at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

CROSS COUNTRY
Dixie State’s Skyler Storie finished in a time of 17:38 to set a new team record and win the women’s 5K at the UNLV Invitational. Storie, a transfer from Central Arizona, broke All-American Rachel Young’s previous time of 17:50.

Brianna Moyle took 13th for DSU, finishing in 18:41. Then the pack came in for the Red Storm. Olivia Moyle took 24th with a 20:09, Elizabeth Cook clocked a 20:33 for 25th and Brittany Brooks finished right behind her for a 20:45 to round out Dixie State’s top five.

On the men’s side, George Barlow and Nick Watson both managed top 15 finishes in the 6.3K. Barlow came in at 12th in a time of 19:54 and Watson finished in 14th with a time of 20:01.

In next for Dixie State was Jonathan VanDeberg in 17th with a 20:58. Shi-Quan Nettingham finished with a time of 21:46 and Alex Schiffman was right behind in 22:02.8

The Red Storm will visit Southern Utah University for the next meet on Oct. 10.
