ST. GEORGE — Nathan Zimmerman, an 83-year-old Parowan resident, pleaded guilty on Sept. 16 to fatally shooting is step-daughter.

Iron County Attorney Scott Garrett said now that Zimmerman has pleaded guilty to the charges facing him, a presentencing investigation, or PSI, will be conducted to allow officials access to more information about Zimmerman.

“So that is referred to Adult Probation and Parole to prepare a (PSI) about his background and history,” Garrett said. “They will make a recommendation as to what they think the sentence should be.”

There is not much left to argue in this case since the charges carry a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years to life in prison , Garrett said. Zimmerman will not be given the option for any probation and the sentence is pretty much set.

In a probable cause statement supporting Zimmerman’s arrest, Iron County Sheriff’s Detective David Mitchell wrote that on July 10 officers responded to Zimmerman’s home after a woman called 911 and said her daughter had been shot.

In the statement, Mitchell wrote that once on scene, officers found 57-year-old Janet Colleen Goode fatally wounded in the driveway.

Goode was pronounced dead at the scene and Zimmerman was taken into custody for questioning, according to the statement. Zimmerman then waived his right to have an attorney present during his questioning.

Zimmerman admitted he had planned to kill Goode and no one else, Mitchell wrote. Zimmerman said as Goode was walking towards his home, he waited until she was within firing range, picked up his loaded shotgun and shot her once in the chest.

Court documents also indicate that Zimmerman’s wife had filed for divorce on July 10, the same day as the shooting.

Zimmerman is currently incarcerated in the Iron County Jail. Sentencing on his case is set for Nov. 4 at 9 a.m.

How about we hold a #fundraiser for this elderly gent. Since he is “not available” at the time, I will accept the donations in his name. I promise I’ll see to it that they get to where they are intended. He will need to keep his commissary “books” well funded so he gets the zoom zoomz and wham whams he will require while he is incarcerated.

Maybe he was out of his ‘normal’ routine and didn’t go to the gym that morning and had a lapse in memory…

Maybe it was because she was his step daughter

Why do Utah men have such a violent nature about them? It’s no wonder that women in Utah buy handguns, take self-defense lessons and have concealed weapons permits. It’s to protect themselves from the brutal Utah men like this. Too bad the woman had no inkling he was going to kill her. I wonder how much brutality she or her mother experienced from this guy? Why do Utah women tolerate such violence from their Utah men?

Koolaid, you often write of Utah men being violent or abusive. You write of Utah women being shallow and appearance oriented. Have you been anywhere else? All of this is so much worse in other places. How else would the St. George News have room to print articles about every fender bender in town?

Motive is really not necessary to know. The results speak for themselves. I’m surprised we haven’t seen somebody on here crying about how this “old man” should be “spared jail.’ The only difference between a dirt bag, and an OLD dirt bag… age.

Don’t blame this poor old man. He will have to live with this horrible mistake for the rest of his life. Spare him from jail!

Only if he has the blessings of his bishop and comes with the appropriate ward recommends and mission statements.

The version I heard is that he had misplaced his spectacles and fired his gun when he thought he was going to be mauled by a large bear.
