Registration now open for Kanab Writers Conference

KANAB — Registration is now open for the fifth annual Kanab Writers Conference, billed as “the best destination conference for the price.” Held at the Kanab Middle School, the conference takes place Friday evening, Oct. 24, and all day Saturday, Oct. 25. The cost of $40 (if you register online) includes lunch. Walk-ins are welcome, with the door charge of $50.

Teachers attending the conference can earn 10 recertification hours.

The conference has two keynote speakers and twenty breakout classes. The workshops range in subject from scholarly writing, to writing fantasy; from memoir to historical fiction; from self publishing to writing as a spiritual experience.

Friday night’s keynote speaker is Don D. Fowler, award-winning archeologist and author of the book, “The Glen Canyon Country, A Personal Memoir.” The public is invited to join conference attendees as Fowler speaks about the Glen Canyon Salvage Project.  In the early 1960s, this project was to salvage early Native American artifacts before the waters of Lake Powell covered them.

Saturday morning’s keynote speaker is novelist J. Scott Savage. Author of Shadow Mountain’s “Farworld Series” and Harper Collins’ “Case File 13 Series,” Savage’s keynote is “Do I have to choose between writing for love or sales?”

There will be a block of breakout classes Friday evening and four more breakout time blocks on Saturday after the keynote speech.

Besides Fowler and Savage, other presenters at the conference include Amanda Sowards, Angie Lofthouse, Rod Miller, Janette Rallison, Marilyn Richardson, Carla Kelly, Marsha Ward, Liz Adair, Raven Chiong, Ron Shook, Tanya Parker Mills and Michael Young.

All the presenters and keynote speakers will have their books for sale in the bookstore, which will also be open to the public during the conference.

The conference is presented by the Center for Education, Business and the Arts, Kanab City, Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area, Kane County Office of Tourism, and the Southwest Applied Technology College.
