Alden Garth Belliston

Belliston, Garth obit(September 23, 1922—September 13, 2014)

Alden Garth Belliston, age 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, September 13, 2014, in St. George, Utah. He was born September 23, 1922, in Nephi, Utah, to Lester Bardsley and Tryphena Mary Howell Belliston. Garth was the youngest of nine children. He grew up in Nephi, Utah, and graduated from Juab High School in 1940. He attended Snow College before answering the call to serve in the US Army. After fulfilling his military duty he returned to Utah State University from which he graduated.

At USU, he was senior class president and played on the baseball, football and basketball teams. After graduation he accepted a position teaching and coaching at Morgan High School and went on to do the same at Dixie Jr College. In order to support his growing family he needed to make a career change so he moved to Ogden, Utah, where he raised his family and was blessed with a successful career in the insurance business.

After his children were raised, because of his love of Dixie and the people there, Garth and his wife Carol returned to St. George.

Garth remained active in sports throughout his life and was honored by the Utah State High School Association Hall of Fame. Being an active member of the Lions Club, he served in leadership of four local Lions Clubs and was also elected as District Governor of Lions International. Garth was an avid supporter of Dixie State College—seldom missing an athletic event. He loved a good round of golf, his Pepsi chats at Lin’s, hunting, playing cards and travelling. He was instrumental in the pancake breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt in Bloomington for many years.

Garth was all about service—to his family, his church, his community and his country. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His generosity to a good cause was happily given.

Garth married Carol Page in 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had 4 children. Carol passed away in 1997. Garth married Beulah Killpack McArthur in 1998.

He is survived by his wife Beulah, his four children Larry (Marge), Vaughn (Suzanne), Dean (Jerri) and Reta (Steve Mahlstede); step children, Gayle (Dale Brinkerhoff), Connie (Jeff Morby), Robert (Kristen) McArthur and Reed (Susie) McArthur. He is loved and missed by 31 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren.
