Man arrested for theft after helping himself to another man’s cereal

ST. GEORGE – A 41-year-old man was arrested Saturday for burglary, theft, and drug possession after allegedly going into a St. George residence, rummaging through drawers and a refrigerator, and helping himself to a bowl of cereal.

Officers responded to a residential burglary that had just occurred, St. George Police Officer Seth LeFevre said in his probable cause statement supporting the arrest, where a resident stated that a man was in his home and left the area on foot.

The resident told officers he observed several drawers open in his home, an open refrigerator, and a half-eaten bowl of cereal, LeFevre said in the statement. The resident said the condition of his home was not how he had left it.

Officers located the man matching the resident’s reported description a few blocks away from the alleged burglarized residence, LeFevre said, and recognized him as Trampus Walter Shelley from previous incidents.

Shelley then told officers that he was in the residence when a man “pointed a gun at him and told him to get out of the house.”

“(Shelley) admitted to being in the house but stated he was given consent,” LeFevre said, “because he thought it was another person’s residence.”

Shelley was arrested and charged with one second-degree felony for burglary; one class A misdemeanor for drug distribution in a drug free zone; and one class B misdemeanor for theft. He was booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on Saturday. His bail stands at $13,310.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

….when a man “pointed a gun at him and told him to get out of the house.” Was the man pointing a gun, or was the man naked and holding something mistaken for a gun and was it loaded?

@ Mary – You need to be careful when you comment about his name. You are obviously not from around here. AND NONE of you know his circumstances that drove him to this point in his life.
