ALS ice buckets abound; Red Cliffs Health meets challenge, pays challenge forward; Video gallery – growing

ST. GEORGE – Friday the staff and administration of Red Cliffs Health and Rehab doused themselves with ice water for the trending ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. In addition to soaking themselves, Red Cliffs will be donating $10 dollars for every staff member, family member, and client associated with Red Cliffs who completes the challenge over the next week.

This is Red Cliffs’ attempt to raise awareness for a cure of Lou Gehrig’s disease, also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been a popular online movement in which those “challenged” or “called-out” have 24 hours to either donate money to the ALS Association, or dump a bucket of ice water over their head. The participants can then continue the cycle by naming a person or group of their choice who must make the same decision.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As it progresses, the disease can cause the brain to lose control over muscle movement, which can eventually lead to paralysis or death.

“We have had a lot of people in our building who have been challenged,” Red Cliffs Health’s Community Relations Coordinator Hayley Pearson said. “We decided to do the challenge as a group.”

After they complete the challenge, Red cliffs will be challenging all of the other health facilities around town.

“There are a lot of people who tend to get out of it, because they don’t donate,” Pearson said. “We are doing it a bit differently, we are donating $10 dollars for everyone who wants to do it. We have patients, staff memebers, and family memebers who all want to do it.”

Over the next week Red Cliff’s will allow these people associated with their program to participate in the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ and will donate $10 dollars for their completion of the challenge.

“There are 10 of us total doing it today, so that’s $100 dollars,” Pearson said. “Our purpose is to make sure we do donate. We have around 120 staff members, and nearly 80 residence, so it will hopefully add up.

It’s not copycats or idiotic. Everyone is doing it for a good cause to raise money for ALS. If you dont understand that then you are an uneducated moron! Also no one asked for your negative comments. If you can’t be a good good person to take your stand for the cause then just shut up and keep to your miserable self!

will dunking someone in ice water long enough actually cure ALS?

  • BOINK August 23, 2014 at 2:25 pm

I’d rather see 18 – 25 year old women in tight t-shirts (no bra, of course) doused with ice cold water. People would pay to see that. That would raise lots of money and other things.

The whole premise is that either you donate and if you don’t then you douse yourself, right? So if these people are so admirable, than why are they all wet?… And whatever happened to doing things for the right reason rather than for 2 seconds of fame?

    • Jj August 24, 2014 at 10:03 am

I’d rather see people do good things for the attention of it than not doing it at all. Judging by the increase in funding for ALS research, people weren’t donating ” for the right reasons” before. So it’s a good thing that has resulted in a benefit, and people pointing fingers (like you) just look petty

I wonder if all the water being wasted really does any good we are in a drough. so here’s a thought waste water and create a problem while trying to fix another…think people my good heck cause or not FOLLOWER!

  • bobber August 24, 2014 at 1:27 pm

Just to add: Just because everyone is aware of this trend of every idiot and their mom dumping water on their heads doesn’t mean ALS is the only cause you can donate to. They just happen to have claimed the most idiotic trend for their cause…

  • zzaezyro August 24, 2014 at 3:18 pm

This “idiotic trend” has raised over 50 MILLION for ALS research………so by all means, come up with a “smarter” trend and get back to me when you’ve hit the mark.
