MILFORD — The small city of Milford will host an upcoming signing ceremony Monday between Beaver County, Rocky Mountain Power and the Bureau of Land Management-Cedar City Field Office.
The signing authorizes the construction of a new 138,000-volt transmission line running 25-miles on public land from Cameron to Milford. The new line will increase electric power capacity and enhance service reliability to Beaver County, according to a BLM press release. Residents in the county currently rely on a single 46,000-volt transmission line.
While Beaver County doesn’t have a large problem with power outages, Beaver County Commissioner Mark Whitney said, this new line will give Beaver County an additional back-up power source should something happen to the first line as well as helps secure a good future for the area.
“What this new line does is, it not only loops the power, but it gives us additional power that is needed for the industry that we’ve got slated down the road,” Whitney said.
Those signing the documents will be BLM-Utah Director Juan Palma and Rocky Mountain Power President and CEO Richard Walje. Currently, there is no set date for construction to start on the line, but there is hope it will begin to take shape late this fall or early spring 2015.
This has been one of the best collaborative efforts between government entities and private industry that he has been a part of, Whitney said.
“The Cedar City field office of the BLM — especially the state office — has just been impeccable to work with …,” Whitney said. “It’s too bad Washington D.C. can’t take a lesson and learn what local control and local collaboration can do to get things done properly on the ground.”
The document signing ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. at the Milford City Office located at 26 S. 100 West, in Milford.
