WASHINGTON COUNTY – A severe thunderstorm making its way across Washington County toward Iron County, is causing extensive standing water on Interstate 15, contributing to at least one accident and considerable traffic slowing.
A single-vehicle accident occurred at mile marker 13 when the vehicle slid off the Interstate.
St. George News Reporter T.S. Romney said, from the Interstate, “It’s a tyrannical downpour here.”
Northbound I-15 there is a ton of standing water, Romney said, it gets worse after Washington Parkway Exit 13 through Exit 16 Hurricane. Visibility is poor.
Traffic southbound I-15 is almost at a standstill between at least mile markers 14 and 16.
Precautionary and preparedness actions
- Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. Most flood deaths occur in automobiles.
- Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
- Using cruise control in the rain can cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Be aware of pooling water on highways ahead of you and slow down.

My husband tried to take the back road in from Washington (Telegraph) and decided to just stay there. He went to a friend’s house and found the guy shoveling ditches to keep the water level down in his front yard. Apparently this is a repeat of last year.
