Golfing for a cause; Drive for Charity Golf Tournament

HURRICANE — St. Paul’s Catholic Center welcomes the community in its biggest fundraising event of the year, the 12th annual Drive for Charity Golf Tournament to be held Sept. 13 at the Sky Mountain Golf Course, located at 1030 N. 2600 West in Hurricane.

Charities to benefit

Since 2002, the St. George Catholic Church and St. Paul’s Catholic Center have collaborated in organizing once a year golf charities that randomly choose two different community organizations each year to benefit. This year, Hurricane Dixie Care & Share and Solomon’s Porch will be the charities to benefit.

For the last three years, Solomon’s Porch Foursquare Fellowship church has provided a hot meal to nearly 100 people each Sunday at noon. This “Sunday Feast”, a restaurant-quality, full-course meal, includes foods not normally seen inside the walls of a soup kitchen, Rev. Jimi Kestin said.

“The Sunday feast kind of grew out of a need and exploded into making a difference in the community,” Kestin said. “We use that time to build trust with people who come to the feast and through that relationship we are able to find out what their basic needs are.”

Because of this, over 20 families within this last year have been able to better their living situation, he said, and noted that they wouldn’t be able to do what they do without the generous support from outside of the church. Especially for their small size with less than 50 people who attend service each Sunday.

Hurricane Dixie Care & Share provides fresh produce and non-perishables each week on Monday 4-7 p.m. and Thursday-Friday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. for families and people down on their luck.

“It’s very rewarding to be able to help those in need,” said Gene Coryell, co-chair of the Drive for Charity Golf Tournament. “This event helps the catholic charities do what they do for the community and gives us a chance to give back to community organizations who provide a nonprofit service in the area.”

The Tournament

The Drive for Charity Golf Tournament will begin with a jolt from Starbucks coffee who will be there to serve beverages and Danishes in the morning. Throughout the day, there will be multiple drawings for prizes such as free rounds of golf at Entrada Golf Club, vacation packages and more.

Cost of participation is $100 per person and includes a cart, 18 holes, lunch and a bucket of balls. Sponsorship costs $250 and includes banner at tee, golf for one, cart, lunch and door prizes.

Aug. 31 is the last day to signup.
