PAROWAN — Parowan Mayor Don Landes presented a request for $2.5 million in funding to the Permanent Community Impact Board for a new City Hall on Friday.

The current City Hall building is 90 years old and is in much need of repairs that would cost as much as $2.1 million to fix, Parowan City Manager Shayne Scott said.

The money requested for the new building is 60 percent grant and 40 percent low-interest loan that would stretch to 30 years. The board allocated the funding with a 1.5 percent interest loan for the requested term, according to a press release.

When the funding is complete, decisions on design and location will take place, Scott said.

“We are very excited for this new building,” he said. “This will be a great new addition to our city.”

Speculation over asbestos and other issues within the current building have influenced the new addition decision. Possible uses for the current building would be to sell it as an economic development tool or as a visitor’s center, Scott said.

“There are less problems with it that wouldn’t be a problem using in those ways,” he said.

Final decisions will be made in two to three months and the new building is expected to be complete in summer of 2015, Scott said.

The motion to approve the project was made by San Juan County Commissioner Bruce Adams who felt a personal connection to the city. He wanted to help the city as an expression of gratitude for the help Parowan leaders, who were also his ancestors, gave to Mormon pioneers crossing through to the San Juan Mission in the 1800s.

“Parowan City is extremely excited to move forward on the design and construction of a new city office,” the release states.”There are many details yet to work out but this funding hurdle was the largest hurdle of all. Parowan City expresses gratitude to the Permanent Community Impact Funding Board for their much-needed assistance to this important project.”

How better to serve the citizens of Parowan, than a new Town Hall?

As of 2012, the population of Parowan, UT. was 2,827. – If you took the 2-1/2 million dollars and gave each resident $884.32, it would help the citizens in that city, much more than a new City Hall would.

Take the remaining $27.36 and buy the mayor a meal, at the Parowan Cafe or the TA Truck Stop.

Politicians always have “thier” best interests in mind, not those of their constituents… Parowan is a podunk town (not sarcastic, just honest) and needs something to attract tourism or generate capital – and a new Town Hall just does NOT fit in that category.
