CEDAR CITY — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)-Utah Cedar City Field Office began the construction phase of the Parowan Gap Visitor Site Improvement project on Monday, Aug. 4. The area will remain open for public use during construction, but visitors are advised to use caution and abide by signs closing or cordoning off specific areas.
“Striking a balance between recreation use and resource protection is a BLM priority and is the driving force behind the Parowan Gap Visitor Site Improvement project,” said Dave Jacobson, BLM-Utah recreation planner. “The project will help us provide a top notch visitor experience while also providing for resource protection.”
Once complete, the project will reduce recreation-caused degradation to cultural and paleontological resources and threatened and endangered species habitat. The project will also improve visitor experience by locating several new public parking areas away from cultural resources; installing a convenient vehicle turnaround; constructing a non-motorized visitor trail, shade structure and restroom facility; and stabilizing areas to help prevent rockslides.
The Parowan Gap is a small canyon located 12 miles north of Cedar City, Utah, that provides a wide variety of recreational activities, including hiking, geocaching and rock climbing. The canyon also contains unique cultural, paleontological and wildlife resources.
