ST. GEORGE – President of the National Association of Counties Riki Hokama has asked Alan Gardner of the Washington County Commission to serve in a key leadership position within the National Association of Counties, specifically as chair of the Management Subcommittee, Public Lands Steering Committee, and to serve as a member of the Rural Action Caucus Steering Committee, according to a Washington County press statement.
Founded in 1935, the National Association of Counties assists all 3,069 counties in the United States in pursuing excellence in public service to produce healthy, vibrant, safe and resilient counties, according to the association’s website.
County leaders develop and shape the association’s mission and goal of promoting sound public policies, fostering county solutions and innovation, promoting intergovernmental and public-private collaboration and providing value-added services to save counties and taxpayers money.
The Association’s committees, whose members include county officials from every region of the country, have a variety of responsibilities, and committee leadership assignments are key positions, according to the press statement. The various National Association committees review and make recommendations on issues and legislation.
The National Association of Counties is a powerful unifying voice for counties in Washington DC.
Because Washington County has a high percentage of federal land ownership, federal land and water policy is extremely significant. The Public Lands Steering Committee has jurisdiction over all matters relating to federally-owned public lands including federal land management programs.
Commissioner Gardner is excited to serve on the National Association of Counties’ national leadership team, the statement said.
