St. George Legion wins 2, will play for shot at state title today

LOGAN — St George responded in a big way on Wednesday at the Utah State Legion Championship Tournament. First, the Sentinels defeated Herriman 3-1 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. Then, St George defeated Layton 10-8 to move to the final day as one of the three teams remaining in pursuit of the state American Legion championship.

In the first game, Carter Milne had an outstanding pitching performance, giving up only 1 run in six innings pitched to notch the win. The Sentinels led throughout, taking a 2-0 lead on a Josh Howard home run after Hunter Hansen singled. After Herriman closed it to 2-1 on a solo homer, St George responded with an RBI single by Austin Rueseler.  Howard also had a double in the contest, with Rueseler and Brenr Nelson both collecting 2 hits.

In the semifinal game, Chris Petrosie started for the Sentinels on the mound, despite being up most of the night before with food poisoning.  However, he gave a great effort in 3 innings pitched and left the game leading 9-4. Petrosie has had a superb season for the St George legion team and recently received a scholarship to play for Central Washington University in Yakima, Wash.

Against Layton, St George scored 5 runs in the first inning, sending 10 batters to the plate in the inning. The tough Layton team did pose a rally to come within 2 runs, rallying first in the sixrh to come within 2 runs at 10-8 and later getting the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh. But Connor Clark executed the save opportunity, getting the final hitter to fly out to right. For the game, Clark and Hansen both hit home runs.

The Sentinels now advance to play Thursday at 4 p.m. against the Mountain Crest Trappers Orange team. The winner of that contest will play Helper later that evening at 7 p.m. in the championship game. Either team would have to beat Helper twice to win the championship, as Helper is the lone undefeated team in the tournament.
