Traffic stop leads to discovery of drugs, guns, child endangerment

CEDAR CITY – After stopping a vehicle Monday night for an equipment violation, Cedar City Police officers found a controlled substance in the possession of Kyle Espinoza, 26, of Cedar City, a passenger in the car. With Espinoza’s permission, officers proceeded to his home and performed a search of the residence, finding more narcotics that were accessible to children as well as multiple firearms.

“The passenger was identified as Kyle Richard Espinoza,” Sgt. Jimmy Roden of the Cedar City Police said in a statement issued Tuesday morning. “Espinoza was found to be in possession of Methamphetamine.”

According to the statement, drugs and paraphernalia were found during the search of the home and were accessible to a minor child living there.

“Espinoza was found to be a convicted felon,” Roden said in the statement. “Multiple firearms were discovered in the home.”

Espinoza was arrested and transported to the Iron County Jail, where he was booked on charges of possession of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony; child endangerment, a third-degree felony; weapon possession by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; two counts of possessing a controlled substance, both class-A misdemeanors; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class-B misdemeanor.

Espinoza is still in police custody as this report is published.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
