IRON COUNTY – An 83-year-old man allegedly involved in Thursday’s fatal shooting in Parowan has been charged with murder.
Nathan Zimmerman, of Parowan, is accused of shooting and killing his 57-year-old stepdaughter Thursday afternoon.
According to a probable cause statement, a woman called 911 stating her daughter had been shot. Police arrived at the scene, a home located at 272 South 800 West, and found a woman lying in the driveway who had been fatally wounded. She died at the scene.
Authorities have yet to officially release the name of the victim.
Zimmerman was detained by police at the scene. The Iron County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation at the request of Parowan Police Chief Kenneth Carpenter, according to the statement. Zimmerman was taken into the custody of the sheriff’s office.
According to the probable cause statement, Zimmerman waived his right to an attorney and confessed to shooting his stepdaughter. He said it was his intention to kill her that day and no one else. He had pre-loaded a shotgun and pointed it right at his stepdaughter and fired once when she came within firing range.
Also according to court records, Zimmerman’s wife filed for divorce on Thursday.
For now the motive for Zimmerman’s alleged actions remain unclear. Authorities have not remarked on any potential motivation behind Thursday’s fatal shooting.
Zimmerman was booked into the Iron County Jail and has been charged with a count of first-degree felony murder, with a $500,000 cash-only bail attached.
