SOUTHERN UTAH — The National Weather Service has issued a “Flash Flood Watch” for portions of central and southern Utah in effect Thursday from noon through late evening Thursday.
Conditions
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across central and Southern Utah Thursday afternoon through the evening. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing heavy rainfall.
Timing
Thursday, from noon to 10 p.m.
Affected areas
Portions of central and Southern Utah, roughly south of a line from Delta to Nephi to Duchesne, including the following areas: Wasatch Plateau-Book Cliffs; Castle country; San Rafael Swell; Sanpete-Sevier valleys; southwest Utah; Utah’s Dixie and Zion National Park; south central Utah; Glen Canyon Recreation Area; Lake Powell; Central Mountains; and southern mountains.
These areas include the following cities: Scofield, Price, Castle Dale, Emery, Green River, Hanksville, Manti, Richfield, Beaver, Cedar City, Milford, St. George, Kanab, Escalante, Bullfrog, Cove Fort, Koosharem, Fish Lake, Loa, Panguitch, Bryce Canyon and Mesquite, Nev.
Most threatened
Areas most prone to flash flooding include slot canyons and slick rock areas, normally dry washes and small streams in steep terrain. In addition debris flows are also possible near recent burn scars.
Precautionary/ preparedness actions
A “Flash Flood Watch” means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is an extremely dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if flash flooding is observed or warnings are issued.
