Man arrested near KFC after hit-n-run booked on multiple charges

ST. GEORGE – The man involved in a hit-and-run Sunday on Red Hills Parkway has been identified as Jaime Jr Perez, 28, of Las Vegas. Perez was arrested and booked on multiple charges Sunday after he veered off the road while traveling eastbound on Red Hills Parkway then came back onto the roadway and ran into a Honda passenger car, causing the car to hit a large rock and crash into the median. Perez fled the scene of the accident and was later arrested near a KFC restaurant, St. George Boulevard.

Perez was booked on two class-A misdemeanors, for leaving the scene of an accident and assault on a police officer; one class-B misdemeanor for interfering with an arrest; four class-C misdemeanors for having an open alcohol container in his vehicle, speeding, improper lane travel, and providing false information to a police officer.

According to the probable cause statement filed by St. George Police Officer Matthew Sherman in connection with the arrest, officers were able to locate Perez near the area of 800 E. St. George Boulevard after he left the scene of the collision.

Perez first told officers his name was J.R. Jaime which officers later confirmed was false information.

“Jaime admitted to being the suspect driver,” Sherman wrote in the charging documents, “and told me he left the scene of the accident because he was scared and didn’t want to get into trouble.”

After officers detected the smell of alcohol on his breath, Perez admitted to having two beers prior to the collision.

When officers were escorting Perez to a flat surface to complete a series of field sobriety tests, Perez began to run southbound on 800 East toward Tabernacle Street.

“I pursued Jaime on foot and caught him just north of 800 E. Tabernacle,” Sherman said in his statement. “Jaime and I ended up on the ground, on the Northwest corner of 800 E. Tabernacle. After going to the ground, Jaime swung his right elbow back, which grazed the right portion of my jaw.”

Perez continued to resist but was eventually handcuffed and arrested.

“Officer Tim Linton informed me his investigation of the accident concluded that the cause was speed and improper lane travel,” Sherman said. “He also found an open container in Jaime’s vehicle.”

The man driving the Honda that Perez allegedly hit was transported from the accident scene to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George as a precaution for minor back injuries.

Perez was booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility. According to booking information, his bail is set at $2,380.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

Ed. CORRECTION to note KFC located on St. George Boulevard, not Tabernacle Street.

His bail is surprisingly low for the long list of offenses. Why wouldn’t he abscond to another state or country for that matter?
