HURRICANE — Two women were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center Thursday evening after two vehicles collided head-on in front of the Maverik gas station, located at 3400 West.
At approximately 5:38 p.m., a green Honda Pilot driven by a man and carrying four passengers was headed eastbound on state Route 9. At the intersection of SR-9 and 3400 West, the Pilot merged into the left turning lane and began turning left onto 3400 West. Simultaneously, a blue Toyota Matrix driven by a woman was heading westbound on SR-9. She was traveling through the intersection when her Matrix and the Pilot collided head-on, Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
Both eastbound lanes remained open while the accident was cleaned up, but the left turning lane onto 3400 West was closed for about an hour, and westbound lanes were diverted to a single lane.
The woman driving the Matrix and one female passenger in the Pilot were transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center. Both were in stable condition.
Both vehicles had to be towed. The accident is still under investigation.

This is a weekly occurrence. It makes me nervous that my daughter drives through there everyday to go to work. They really need to get rid of the flashing yellow turn arrow. People here just don’t have a clue how to yield
This intersection has a collision very often. The blinking yellow left turn signal can be confusing to those from other regions that do not have it. It looks as though the light is turning red so they hurry through the light in order to not be in the middle of the intersection….
when I first read the comments by char, I thought it read “it can be confusing to those from other religions….” LOL.
SG News can sure be counted on having an article about every car accident in town. How about a news article to educate the drivers on the stuff they should remember from the drivers test they took years ago. I don’t know maybe what a yellow light means??

I don’t think you can blame this on the yellow blinking light. It is either clear to turn left or it isn’t. (Coming from an area without yellow blinking turn signals, it didn’t take but a split second to understand and appreciate them.)
A blinking yelow light, is a yellow blinking light!, wether it’s an arrow,round, square or any other shape, I have always proceeded with caution, especially if turning left, what I do see here in town every single day is morons making a right on a red where oncoming traffic has a green light making a left, now just because I have a green left does not mean I am not watching the moron making that right because all he is doing is watching cars to his left coming down River Rd, it happens going south on River Rd at SG Blvd, then 100 S , 700 S then at River side, there are way to many accidents that can and should be avoided and way to many close calls that should have never been.
It’s NOT the flashing yellow arrow that is to blame. There is a sign next to the signal that says left turn yield on flashing yellow. The problem here is people misjudged the distance and speed of the oncoming vehicles. I and my s.o. have many close calls because people just have to get through that light even if you are right there. S.o. says that they have had to hit their brakes HARD just to avoid an accident cause people turn right in front when you are right there.
Some1 just mentioned a test or something to help people to remember. That’s an idea. But, seriously stop taking chances.
I agree with “KILLJOY” about people misjudging the distance and the speed of oncoming vehicles. The yellow flashing arrow is a great idea – much better than waiting another 5 minutes for another left turn signal, which then only lasts for under 10 seconds.
People drive too fast in that section of Route 9 and should obey the speed limit – the key word here being “limit”. A busy intersection should have a reduced speed limit. Also – longer times on the left turn arrow, would eliminate the “need” for a flashing yield arrow.
I learned to drive in a different state but have lived here 15 years. Utah may be fairly new to yellow blinking arrows, but it’s in the drivers education book and in the test along with flashing red lights. Don’t blame the lights, you should be educated on what the road signs mean. Take that responsibility on yourself when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle. I agree with the statement that you shouldn’t make a left turn when it’s not clear to turn, unless the light is a directional solid green arrow. Please teach your daughter, and hope the other person is educated as well.
Those lights are located all over Utah and they have very few accidents…those Hurricane people just drive horribly. Maybe somebody could read the sign for them.
I run into very kind and considerate people while shopping or doing other business in this area. However, I get out on the road and am met with many selfish, inconsiderate drivers. These are probably many of the same people who are generous when face to face but drive like self-centered clods when anonymously behind the wheel.
As a retired cop, what do you think is the #1 cause of accidents? Correct…UNSAFE LEFT TURNS INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.
