ST. GEORGE – A number of local churches will come together July 17 to host a nondenominational Christian concert featuring contemporary Christian artist Phil Wickham. Also performing that evening will be Christian singer-songwriter Moriah Peters. The concert will take place at Calvary Chapel St. George, 3922 S. Pioneer Rd., and proceeds will benefit the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins.

Headliner Wickham has only recently returned to performing and touring after undergoing throat surgery earlier this year to have a polyp removed from one of his vocal folds. He said this concert will be his first in Southern Utah.

“It is a concert, but even more so it’s kind of like a time of worship, and I feel like that goes beyond music; it goes beyond a building,” Wickham said. “It’s more about a lifestyle of giving rather than receiving, and so I think it’s really important to have these nights benefit something. And I’m excited to benefit something local there in St. George.”

The concert is being offered as part of, which was launched by a coalition of local churches. So far, the group has organized three concerts – Wickham’s concert will be the fourth – and they hope to sponsor two concerts each year. Every concert has sold out thus far, John Shaw, Calvary Chapel St. George associate pastor, said.

Participating congregations include Calvary Chapel St. George, Calvary Chapel Mesquite, Calvary Chapel Hurricane Valley, Saint George Community Church, Solomon’s Porch Foursquare Fellowship, Sonrise Christian Fellowship, South Mountain Community Church – Springs Campus and Southland Bible Church. Each participating church is helping sell tickets for the show.

Wickham said he’s glad to see local churches transcend the congregational barrier to work together and sponsor a positive community event.

“It’s always a good thing, to me, to see churches just working together,” he said, “because I really get frustrated with the denominational kind of walls that people put up. It seems like if we could be together we’d be stronger than not together, you know, to make a difference in our cities and our towns and our country. The more of that the better, I say.”

Wickham, whose single “This Is Amazing Grace” was No. 1 for three months on American Christian radio and was nominated for Christian radio station K-LOVE’s song of the year award, said he’ll be performing a lot of material from his new album “The Ascension” during the concert.

“The idea of ‘The Ascension’ comes from the ancient Israelite people that we read about in the Old Testament,” Wickham said. “They would have these nationwide parties, these festivals, where they all get together in the city of Jerusalem to worship God. So if you think, just millions of people coming together to remember what God has done in the past and to hold on to the promises of the future and to worship Him.”

Wickham said the image of millions of Israelites ascending the hills of Jerusalem and singing songs of worship made him want to create modern songs to help God’s people get to a higher spiritual place in a similar way.

Tickets for the concert are $15 for the show only, or $25 to attend the concert and a VIP meet-and-greet. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online or from any of the participating churches.
