BLM approves treatment plan for wild horses

CEDAR CITY — The Bureau of Land Management Utah Cedar City Field Office signed the Decision Record Monday approving the proposed Bible Spring Complex Gather, Removal and Fertility Treatment Plan. Monday’s decision authorizes the gather and removal of excess wild horses and the application of fertility control in Southern Utah’s Bible Spring Complex two to four times over a 10-year period.

The gather plan outlines future management of wild horses in the Bible Spring Complex, beginning with gather and removal of approximately 140 animals from the Blawn Wash Herd Management Area in July. The Blawn Wash gather is the first step in reducing herd numbers in the Bible Spring Complex to a sustainable level. The gather plan will also guide the BLM in monitoring herd health and wild horse populations in the Bible Spring Complex using various data collection techniques.

The four Herd Management Areas that make up the Bible Spring Complex — Bible Spring, Blawn Wash, Tilly Creek and Four Mile — are located in western Iron and Beaver counties, approximately 30 miles west of Minersville in the Wah Wah and Indian Peak mountain ranges. The Bible Spring Complex is comprised of approximately 222,929 acres of public, private and state lands.

The environmental assessment and decision documents are posted here.

BLM mission statement

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency.  This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska.  The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.  The BLM’s mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield.  In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.

Grant..you are the SORELY misinformed person here! Have you read the studies?
DO you know that the cattle to wild horse ratio is 50:1….that would be 50 COWS to ONE wild horse! IT has been proven OVER AND OVER that it is the OVERGRAZING by cattle and other LIVESTOCK that are creating the problems! they destroy wild grasses and watersheds.
    Get a grip!
LIVESTOCK are not FEDERALLY protected on PUBLIC LANDS! It is the WILD horses and burros that are the FEDERALLY protected animals!
The RANCHERS need to care for their ANIMALS ON THEIR OWN LAND! GET OFF THE PUBLIC LAND!!!!
There are more horses in capitivity than exist in the wild and that is a national atrocity!
THE BLM is a HORRIBLE manager of the land…they cannot manage themselves out of a paperbag let alone the millions of acres they are paid (TAX PAYER DOLLARS) to properly protect the interests of the wildlife and horses and burros.
The BLM is not responsible for cattle…THE RANCHERS are AND it should NEVER BE AT THE EXPENSE of the wild HORSES and BURROS!

Why do you hate the widlife and functional ecosystems?
Australia knows, they are aerial gunning horses by the hundreds because they know the impacts of horses, and their public understands too. Only in this country do we let mental midgets define what is native and natural.

Only a horse advocate could disregard all of the range science in the world, disregard tye needs of true wildlife, and condemn horses to the misery all feral horses experience.
