Paraphernalia found in truck after SR-9 rollover

ST. GEORGE — After being ejected from his vehicle during a rollover on state Route 9 just west of Rockville, a Hurricane man in his early 20s was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George Monday afternoon. Utah Highway Patrol troopers investigating the accident found suspected drugs and paraphernalia.

Around 1:50 p.m., the man was traveling eastbound on SR-9 at mile post 24 just west of Rockville, where, UHP Sgt. Danny Ferguson said, he curved too much and hit a driveway, launching his Toyota Corolla about 50-100 feet. The vehicle descended, hit a fence and then bolted off a hillside, clearing another 4-foot fence, which resulted in the car rolling multiple times.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, UHP, Springdale Police and LaVerkin Police responded to the scene.

The driver was apparently not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car through the driver’s side window, Ferguson said. A medical helicopter was requested and then cancelled and the man was transported by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center.

The man’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Prior to the accident, the driver had been reported for acting suspiciously and yelling at people near a Maverik gas station, Ferguson said. Upon investigation of the car, UHP troopers found suspicious items including what they believed to be marijuana and paraphernalia, Ferguson said. The driver was charged with driving under the influence.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by responders on scene and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Report revised June 24 as follows:  The Toyota involved in the incident was a Toyota Corolla, UHP spokesman confirmed Tuesday. It was described in first version published as a truck and corrections have been made throughout the report. The accident occurred just west of Rockville at mile post 24 on state Route 9; clarification as to location made.

Just where did this happen? Curved too much and hit a driveway? Either he swerved and went into the opposing traffic to hit the driveway or he veered off to the right for no reason……The only curve I can think of Eastbound is at the old Cop-Shop and Fire Station but if he curved too much he would have hit the center divider and not even got to a driveway…..

It was just west of milepost 24 (west of Rockville). Also the article states that it was a truck, but it was in fact a car. We saw the accident occur as we were headed west on the 9.

Correction and clarification have been made, PC, in two particulars: The Toyota involved in the incident was a Toyota Corolla, UHP spokesman said Tuesday. It was described in first version published as a truck and corrections have been made throughout the report. The accident occurred just west of Rockville at mile post 24 on state Route 9; clarification as to location has been made.
        With our apologies,

      Hi Char,
The accident occurred on state Route 9 at mile post 24 just west of Rockville, and we have reconfirmed that with Utah Highway Patrol today.
I think the dateline, Hurricane, caused confusions; and I will make clarification on that now.
We appreciate your attention, thank you so much,

It was not a truck but a pasatt car if that’s how you spell it. Mile marker 24, going east bound. There is a drive way if that’s what you call it.

What did the driver test positive for? Was the DUI charge based on an actual test result or an assumption of substance use? Suppose a driver was transporting a 6-pack of beer, unopened, and was in an accident. Would just having an unopened 6-pack of beer result in a DUI, further the stigma that in Utah, you are guilty until proven innocent? Marijuana is legal in other states and has medical use benefits (cancer and glaucoma treatment).

Well he was not drinking I know that for a fact and he does not smoke pot, the drugs found in the car was the owners of the car. The kid was using it to go to work

    • feelingbadfor owner oc car now she has to pay for his screw up June 24, 2014 at 2:28 pm

I don’t know who you are and who you are to say those things without knowledge you do not know this person and I can tell you for a fact that indeed none of that was the the owner of the vehicle it was his and not only did he drive intoxicated but he hit and ran a car is at Farmers parking lot and then got into an altercation at maverick if
you could read correctly can read.

I think the “Author” did a little too much Creative Writing” on this story! Was she even present at the scene at anytime??

the car wreck publication of southern utah if they didn’t report on wrecks and police stuff they would not have any stories.. how is the fishing at gunlock can’t find anything on the app.

  • jen June 24, 2014 at 1:47 pm

This is my little brother and he doesn’t smoke pot. I am fairly certain that whatever they found in the vehicle that it belongs to the owner and if that is the case I seriously hope they will not blame it on my brother. My brother has his faults, but he is a good kid and he wouldn’t risk himself like thAt going to work. I am upset, that he is being charged for being under the influence before they had the test results.

  • anthony June 24, 2014 at 6:49 pm

Well I know wat really and is not his fault wreck happen , and the other stuff that’s was found in the car was not his, it’s the owner’s of the car he has no drugs in his system or anything else

    • Not his fault? June 25, 2014 at 10:08 am

To Anthony and Jen…We don’t know what the drug tests will or will not show, yet. You two, however are convinced that “the wreck is not his fault.” Really? I drive that road every day. It would take a lot of speed to miss that curve. To give him even more benefit of the doubt, even if he was evading an oncoming passing vehicle, there is a large shoulder to pull onto. So who is at fault? Without a seat belt, he was lucky to not have been killed.

      • Jen June 25, 2014 at 9:52 pm

No where did I say that the wreck was not his fault, I said he has his faults. Reading comprehension for the win. I also was saying I think it is wrong that they are jumping to conclusions without having the toxicology reports back. In Anthony’s defense, sometimes wrecks do just happen, that is why they are called accidents. None of us were in the car with him when this happened and any number of non traceable factors could be involved. Just because you drive the road everyday doesn’t make you the expert on this specific occurrence.

        • Not his fault? June 26, 2014 at 12:32 pm

Really? They don’t need toxicology reports to make an arrest. They most likely found probable cause to arrest him on DUI due to his field sobriety tests or observations of him at the scene. As for my reading comprehension, I did lump you in with Anthony’s comment due to the enabling excuses you made for your brother.

  • Brooke June 25, 2014 at 9:08 pm

Yes, he is lucky to have not been killed but this is his wife and the only one who has seen his test results. There wasn’t anything in his system, all tests came back negative for both drugs and alcohol. It was one of his co-workers that freely handed him the keys to go to work and unfortunately he got in an accident. Stuff happens, get over it and know the facts.

After having surgery Tuesday. Wednesday, Hospital said he would need to go home , insured or not? After 6 hour surgery included 3 plates of reconstructive surgery to his face only and jaws completely wired. I would say there is something wrong with this Picture. Jen and Anthony’s brother has suffered enough. The test results are confirmative.

  • JADK4 June 28, 2014 at 1:01 am

    Praying for you’all!!!
