GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – Wednesday, at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call via satellite phone reporting a female in and out of consciousness from an apparent allergic reaction at river mile 168 on the Colorado River.
The victim became unconscious, and members of her group initiated CPR. Arizona Department of Public Safety personnel, responding by helicopter, also provided life support; however, all attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.
The 54-year-old victim has been identified as Kathy Newman, of Seattle, Washington. The group she was with was on day five of a seven-day commercial river trip.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No further information is available at this time.
