GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — Two temporary road closures have been put into effect Thursday for the safety of both the public and firefighters at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon due to a lightning-started fire, named the Galahad Fire, discovered May 23. The closures in effect include: The W4 road, closed from the junction of the Forest Service Road 268B south to Pont Sublime, and the W1 road, also known as Point Sublime Road, closed from the W4 junction, from the east to the western end of the Basin.
The Galahad Fire grew to approximately 711 acres Wednesday. Firefighters initiated structure protection at the historic Kanabownits Cabin prior to the fire’s potential spread by wrapping the cabin with a fire resistant aluminum material that reflects heat to help protect the structure in the event fire burns around it. Firefighters also worked on prepping line to keep the fire south and west of the W4 road.
The fire is burning in an area where a previous fire occurred within the last 15 years located one mile southwest of the historic Kanabownits Cabin on the Walla Valley Peninsula. Fire managers continue to monitor the natural progress of the fire for both resource and protection objectives which include forest health, protection of sensitive cultural resources and wildlife habitat.
Current resources assigned to the fire include a wildland fire module, one hotshot crew, six engine crews, a water tender and miscellaneous overhead. An additional hotshot crew arrived Wednesday evening.
