ST. GEORGE – In the parking lot of Black Bear Diner on Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the public can watch master carver Ray Schulz carve custom bears using a chainsaw and two logs of wood. Schulz is on an 8-day tour to seven different cities. St. George is the last stop with all the money raised being donated to P.A.W.S., a local animal rescue organization.
Schulz lives in the state of Washington and has been carving the diners’ unique bears since 1999. Since beginning, he has carved over 200 bears for the 62 Black Bear locations.
When owners of the St. George diner, Randy and Tami Wong, heard about Chain-saw for Change, they began looking around for a nonprofit charity to donate the proceeds to.
“We have gotten two dogs from PAWS and they are a great charity,” Randy Wong said. “Every single penny and then some will be given to PAWS after the event.”
P.A.W.S.’ mission is to decrease euthanasia in the local animal shelters by spaying and neutering animals, educating the public, and carefully placing animals in proper homes. Dogs and cats will be shown at the Chain-saw for Change event for those interested in adopting a pet.
“It took us completely by surprise that the Black Bear Diner wanted the proceeds to go to us,” Lynn Burger, P.A.W.S. president and director of operations, said. “They have always been supportive and have given donations in the past.”
All of the money raised will go directly back into saving animals in kill shelters.
A custom bear sculpture will be raffled off Monday. The public can purchase raffle tickets now or at the event. The suggested donation for a single raffle ticket is $5 or $20 for five tickets. Over 100 raffle tickets have already been purchased.
