Snow Canyon High mourns loss of two students, offers counseling, holds vigils

ST. GEORGE – The Snow Canyon High School community is grieving the loss of two of its students who died in unrelated accidents over the weekend.

Brooks Johnson, a senior, died in a jeeping accident in Mohave County, Ariz. Saturday night, and Austin McElyea, a junior, died when an ATV collided with him while dirt biking in Veyo Sunday night.

A vigil for Johnson was held Sunday evening at the school and was very well attended.

“Johnson was well known and had a big impact on the school and the community,” said Warren Brooks, principal at Snow Canyon High. “(The vigil) was amazing, there were a lot of people there.”

While the students and community attended the vigil for Johnson they learned of the death of McElyea.

“The students came to me this morning and asked if they could hold a vigil for McElyea,” the principal said. “I told them absolutely.”

McElyea’s vigil will be held Monday at approximately 8 p.m. in front of the Snow Canyon High school.

A counseling team from the Washington County District offices as well as the school counselors and school nurse are set up for any students or faculty who may need grief counseling at this time.

My heart and prayers go out to the families. My son was at Brooks vigil when he got the call that Austin needed help. Austin died in my sons arms. He is taking it very hard. Brooks was a great friend to my son, and my son thought that Brooks was a wonderful kid too. My heart is breaking for everyone affected by these tragedies.

God sure has a plan for these young adults passing away on the same day. Rest in peace Brooks, Austin, Tyler and the few others that have gone.
