Expo is on, but what do women ‘really’ want? Men speak

ST. GEORGE – Today, an event that comes to town only twice a year kicked off: What Women Want – Southern Utah Expo. The event started in October 2004 and is held semiannually in May and October. This event runs until 8 p.m. Friday and again from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dixie Convention Center St. George.

“We are expecting up to 10,000 people,” event coordinator Shelley Smith said. “The event will be fun for the entire family. While it’s not meant for the men, there are a lot of booths the men might be interested in, as well as a stage and music that will be going all day.”

What Women Want – Southern Utah Expo presents more than 150 vendors showcasing their products. There is a large diversity of products and services, including makeup, clothing, health care, food and lots more. The event also has hourly giveaways with prizes such as tickets for Tuachan Amphitheatre events, tablets, and vendor products.

“We are going to add more depth and meaning to the expo, not just shopping,” Smith said. “We are going to still have the fun, but we are also going to focus on nonprofits, probably have a book club going forward, maybe in the future add a keynote speaker.”

But what do women really want?

With the opening of the expo, St. George News posed the question: ‘What do women really want?’

Ryan Noland of Mesquite accompanied his girlfriend to the expo; he said: “I feel that women wanted to be understood.” That is why he likes coming to things like the Expo, he said. It gave him a chance to understand what interests his girlfriend.

“What women want seems to change on a daily basis. That’s probably why there has to be so many booths,” LaVerkin resident Timothy Bradshaw said. “It’s not a bad thing, I simply meant that they have a lot of interests and talents that they want to explore.”

“I have a hard time believing that women are that materialistic,” Hurricane resident Steven DeMille said. “To think they can fit all of what women want into a single expo is hilarious.”

Mori Kessler of St George said: “All women want is Diet Coke and new shoes.”

Then again, what do ‘men’ want?

The Expo opened to a growing crowd, and by 11 a.m., an hour after its start, the convention hall was full of both women and men browsing the many vendor booths. To insure all things be equal among the sexes, having questioned men on what they thought women wanted, St. George News turned to the women and asked them what men wanted.

“TV and food,” Ivins resident Tasha Young said.

Recent Dixie State University graduate, Ashley Mangum, said: “Guys are pretty simple, give them their basic needs, and they are happy.”

“I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to say what guys really want,” St. George resident Terrie McConkie said.

I’ve always thought of this as the “what we want women to buy” expo.

What? No church booths handing out literature telling women how to be good, subservient housewives? Isn’t the mindset here “Women, this is what you want” as told to them by men?

What do women want? Me and my friends talk about this all the time. We want to be looked as equals, become the greatest mother, become president of large business firm, become highly educated, if we desire get hard working, caring, loving man who let’s us do anything we please and makes enough money to do so, like to go out 2-3 times weekly and party being able to lower our standards then blame it on the alcohol, be able to play sports well enough someone beside our parents would want to watch it. Like to control mens minds so they think round is the perfect shape, control all situations we are involved in except our children’s lives, take mens sex drives away by mental stimulation not by our looks. In summary we want everything that men are but without the sex drive and change men to what we are perfect, I think we have seen some great improvements. By the way Stg. Wifey (sounds like an STD) get a life or better a good man to keep you busy so you don’t have to send message every few minutes or at least help you say something intelligent, you make the rest of us women look bad. Oh I do hope the have some special smelling oil I can rub on my husband and make him disappear, they do have lavendar that I’ve been rubbing on my pool man. It is spring time, no cleaning just

Go serve your man and dote over your kids. It’s what St George women think they are supposed to do. Higher education? Nope! Career? Nope! Wipe baby butts, keep house and serve men. Yes!!! That’s what StG women do!!!
