ST. GEORGE – One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. Early detection saves lives and on May 13 from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. people can receive a free skin cancer screening at the 400 East campus of Dixie Regional Medical Center, 544 S. 400 East – the “fountain entrance.”

Susan Walsh never dreamt she could get skin cancer. When she received news that she had stage 2 melanoma, she said, her thinking quickly changed.

“When I was a teenager I laid out in the sun,” Walsh said, “but I never thought I would be diagnosed with melanoma.”

When Walsh first saw the spot, she noticed it looked a little suspicious. It was small, the size of a pencil eraser, but it had become black.

“I looked down at my arm one day and thought: ‘I should have that looked at,’” Walsh said.

Four months passed and Walsh became busy with life until one day she had the spot checked out. She was advised to have it immediately removed and tested.

“It’s a sinking feeling when you find out you have skin cancer,” Walsh said.

To anyone who suspects a mole or spot: “Get it checked. Just go and get it checked,” Walsh said.

Preregistration is required for the free skin cancer screenings as space is limited. Telephone 435-688-4175 to do so.
