Red Flag Warning, fire conditions Nevada, Arizona areas

MESQUITE – The National Weather Service has issued a “Red Flag Warning” in effect from 10 a.m. PDT/MST to 8 p.m. PDT/MST Sunday for strong winds and low relative humidity Clark and southwest Lincoln county deserts in Nevada and northern Mohave County, Arizona. A “Red Flag Warning” means critical fire conditions are either occurring or imminent.

Affected areas – In Arizona, Fire Weather Zone 101 Lake Mead National Recreation Area/Colorado River-Arizona side. In California, Fire Weather Zone 229 Lower Colorado River Valley. In Nevada, Fire Weather Zone 465 Clark And southwest Lincoln County Deserts/Las Vegas Dispatch and Fire Weather Zone 466 Lake Mead NRA/Colorado River-Nevada Side.

• Timing – Strong north winds are expected all day Sunday but relative humidity will likely not drop below 15 percent until late morning. Humidity will rise while winds decrease Sunday evening.

• Wind – Strong north winds are forecast to develop behind a cold front Saturday night and Sunday, north 15-30 mph with gusts around 40 mph.

• Humidity – Low relative humidity is expected with any precipitation associated with the cold front remaining north and east; minimum relative humidity 10-15 percent except 5-10 percent at lower elevations along the river.

• Impacts – The combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity and dry fuels can create conditions that are favorable for extreme fire behavior.
